CCRL 40/40, 40/4 and FRC lists updated (7th September 2019)

The latest CCRL Rating Lists and Statistics are available for viewing from the following links:

Our 40 moves in 40 minutes repeating and 40 moves in 4 minutes repeating are both adjusted to the AMD64 X2 4600+ (2.4GHz).
However, our testers use different hardware ranging from the Q8200 through to the most recent i7's and octals. We benchmark our hardware for consistency of results.
These time controls are roughly equivalent to 40 moves in 15 minutes repeating or 40 moves in 1.5 minutes repeating on modern computers.

Please note that the three lists are often updated separately to each other. The FRC list is only updated when a new engine or engine version is being/has been tested.
Also, please note that the 40/40 and 40/4 lists are constructed from totally different databases and not comparable to each other.

Hello! I wonder where I can find Iota 1.0. I see it in the 40/4 list. Is it this engine by D. White? I ask the question because I never saw the 1.0 version and also because I didn't expect to see it so high in the list.

You are right. Either Jim or Kirill named the folder/exes wrongly.
It is in reality 0.1 compiled by Jim Ablett. (CCWiki and my XB/UCI chronology had it righ as 0.1 JA)
I didn't know though that he later (in 2015) released 0.3 as source only and changed this now.

Here is the proof from the same download wrongly named 1.0 JA version (2012-07-07):
(He names it 'Yoda' in the readme but it is 'Iota' in all files and github. Funny that 'Yoda as taken later by another Daniel)

After finding it difficult to improve my first engine AdroitChess, development stopped towards the end of March and I moved onto other projects. However recently I have found some time and decided it would be a good challenge to make a 'micro' engine (<2kb non-blank source), much like microMax and Toledo Nanochess.

Three days later and I am ready to release Yoda version 0.1. This version is simply a foundation with no serious attempt made to save characters or improve strength. It has the following features:
* 1788 bytes in size (no comments or white space)
* Alpha-beta full width search
* Static evaluation consisting of material and centre bonus for pawns, knights and bishops.
* Partial UCI support, understanding 'uci', 'isready', 'position', 'quit' and 'go'. This is enough to play a game under Arena, at least.
* Time management - Using the infomation in the 'go' command and node counts.
* All rules of chess except underpromotion (it will neither play nor accept these).

Note that Daniel White later worked again a bit on Iota and released two source code only versions 0.2 and 0.3.
Github says he even commited 9 changes more after 0.3, but I don't know any of them compiled. (You did compile 0.3 though?)

Note that Daniel White later worked again a bit on Iota and released two source code only versions 0.2 and 0.3.
Github says he even commited 9 changes more after 0.3, but I don't know any of them compiled. (You did compile 0.3 though?)

For me, I use the latest code from the GitHub repository, that I compiled myself. I call it 0.3 because I imagine that there is no important difference with the 0.3 release, and because I don't know how to name it.

To be perfectly exact, I used this slightly modified version (with one line of code added for the support of the "quit" command).

I also have the code of 0.2 and 0.3 releases. And also the code of the 0.1 version (from the forum post). If you are interested, I can compile all.

But, without speaking of the confusion around the version number, I still have an interrogation about the rating of Iota. For me, it's a weaker engine than, for example, Hippocampe. So I wonder how it can be higher in the list. The only explanation that I can see now is that the 0.1 version is stronger than 0.3. I will do some tests to check that.

I found the original thread which clearly says version 0.1 and it escapes why Jim renamed it to 1.0 after compilation
and why no one already complained at the time of the release ;-)

Interesting. Iota 0.1 seems to be indeed much stronger than the other versions.
