AnMon 'archeology'

Post by Guenther »

https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://wb ... oad/anmon/*

While searching for older uci versions of AnMon for certain tasks, I realized a catch 22 in one link for AnMon downloads in my chronology.
It pointed to a wayback archive of arena playchess, but the downloads for AnMon further pointed back to
an old Ridderkerk wayback archive, which failed!

After some research I found them with the search above.
You have to click on the file, then you are sent to a calendar page, here you just click on the marked date.
The download will silently start. (the original html page for it is gone, thus no redirection)

First I thought the older ones won't work anymore, but this was with testing from cmd.
Actually they still all work here on my WIN7-64 from inside a GUI (only tried WB so far).
The older WB AnMon versions still need an extra parameter 'xboard' even in Winboard.

An example with AnMon 4.24 (1999-06!) vs. Abrok 5.0 (2003-05)
No problem for this 20 years old AnMon version in CuteChess with a predefined opening PGN.
Four years younger Abrok could win though from a bad position with very active play.

Thanks, the auto-detection of the link fails here.
Haven't used the url tags for a long time, because it's not necessary usually.

Hi Guenther,

I gave the downloads from Frank's Chess Page (first winboard page by myself) to Leo.
Leo are working some years on my older site.

I think I have all AnMon versions available in the past and also a ChessBase Native version and so one.

I am sure that Christian Barreteau will like that if the AnMon (An for ANgel and Mon for deMON) will be a long time available!!
Unfortunately, some years I had no contacts to him.

Of course, I can do it to on Frank's Chess Page.

Best

Yes..It works but I usually just go to the original site links Anmon (archive) and look for the original download link archive
and "sometines they work and sometimes they don't".....Yours is a three step process...That Anmon download listing for all of the exes/zip files is quite unique...even I have not seen that one before...and I've done some deep diving in almost all of these old archives so congrats!! AR :)
