Yeah, Stockfish's search became asymmetric at some point regardless of Contempt. If you don't like it, you might want to research what version was it (the version before it had symmetric search with Contempt 0) and see what changed it, and revert that patch from Honey.

It isn't just Stockfish's search that is asymmetric. All of them are.

It usually boils down to move ordering.

If, in a rotated position, the perfect reflection of the move is not chosen at every single point, then the move ordering will be different, the branching factor will be different, along with lots of other things.

I have seen positions where an engine will think for hours and not find a solution and with a rotated and/or mirrored position, it finds it fairly quickly.
The first time I ever saw it was in crafty. But then I tried other engines and they all did it.

That does not mean I do not want to attempt to get the right answer though.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Are you sure, Mike?

To me it looks like Contempt breaks the symmetry just like Tempo does.
I may be wrong, ofc.
Static contempt is asymmetric (it is awarded to the side to move at root, so its contribution to the eval changes sign when a root move is made). Tempo is symmetric (it is awarded to the side to move, which is a property of the position). Dynamic contempt is mostly symmetric (since presumably the sign of dynamic contempt changes when a root move is made).

Hmm, after a bit more thinking, maybe I mean something different than you.

Let's say we evaluate a position with white to move.
Let's assume the result is v.

Now we evaluate the same position with black to move.
Without static contempt and Tempo the result will be -v.
That's what I call symmetrical.

With a tempo bonus for the side to move, the eval with white to move will be v + Tempo, with black to move -v + Tempo.
That's asymmetrical.

SF's contempt, however, is only added to one side.
This doesn't seem to break the symmetry.
If we add contempt for white, eval will be v + contempt with white to move, and -v - contempt with black to move.
Of course it depends on the definition of "symmetrical" :D .

For me "symmetrical" means that the evaluation of a position does not depend on which color is the computer (which is usually determined by the side to move at root).

My reply has to be understood using this definition.
Ideas=science. Simplification=engineering.
Without ideas there is nothing to simplify.

Asymmetry is a necessity. There are positions that you would be happy to play from either side. There are positions that you'd want to avoid from both sides. A symmetric, one-dimensional evaluation that goes from white's preference (black is getting mated) to black's preference (white is getting mated) will always be blind to that.
Your beliefs create your reality, so be careful what you wish for.

It seems logical to deploy Stockfish with the strongest possible parameters, and modify the backsolving algorithm.

Then apparently, it's all about the terminal nodes:

1) Mini-Max for White while omitting the Black terminal nodes.

2) Mini-max for Black while omitting the White terminal nodes.

It's possible to optimize this into one process, but this is the basic concept, right?

Re: Stockfish with and without contempt

Yes. A programmer that I don't know if they want to remain anonymous, which I'll call "X. B." actually implemented an asymmetrical Persistent Hash into Stockfish. The kind that remembers what you have analyzed even if you unload the engine and switch off the GUI. You turn it back, and Stockfish remembers.

What he did was implementing two different learning hashes, one for white and one for black, allowing Stockfish to learn the best PV and evaluation for each side independently (as it should), and this was a clear improvement, as previous attempts (like those from Jeremy Bernstein) would have the user wasting too much time backsolving the score for both sides (which was a backsolving that Stockfish can see and use directly on the search from the root position) even though it's only useful for one of them (it's only useful for both sides in the mainline, but 99% of the time you're examining sidelines where only the side that wants to find a new line, that is attacking the current PV, needs backsolving. The score of the other one is irrelevant and surprisingly can be discarded; what matters are the moves.)

After the engine behaves like this, the user can be interested in doing four possible things:

1. Decrease evaluation for both sides. This is like symmetric eval, white wants black's score to be as low as possible and black wants white's score to be as low as possible. The main lines are refuted, evaluation flattens (you can no longer tell the difference between moves), and it leads to passive moves, but since chess is a draw with perfect play and the evals get closer to 0.00, this gives the illusion of getting closer to the truth.

2. White increases its eval while black decreases white's eval. In this one white tries to find the lines where black is most likely to blunder, while black adopts a defensive stance and tries to refute everything white throws at them. This is white contempt, and it can be arbitrarily large, because the eval shown doesn't matter (it could be 5.00 for a drawn position), it only matters that it's the highest white's eval when compared to the other moves. I wasn't winning much correspondence games until I switched from 1. to 2. when playing the white side, because it turns out analyzing opponents' attacks when they're black is mostly a waste of time (the best white attacks are enough to defend.)

3. Black increases its eval while white decreases black's eval. It's the same of above, but with switched sides. I started winning games as black after switching to this, but it is very dangerous against a superior opponent. Black contempt means that you're willing to bet that in a position out of book that seems equal, it's possible that white is the one that has more difficulty playing the right moves (like in the Italian.) What you'd want to do is getting to a position near 0.00 first, and then switching to this, and it's likely you'll actually get an advantage from the black side because you're playing the moves with the most initiative.

4. Increase evaluation for both sides. This is a really fun one, no side cares about what the other does, they just throw their strongest moves to one another. With this white and black's eval tend to diverge, and reach positions where both sides have the initiative, which tends to be the least drawish, and where complexity naturally goes up. I used to believe that with this method I could play into a complex position at will and force the opponent into a complex position where they were tested to find the best moves, but Ozymandias proved that an opponent wanting a draw can force the game into simple positions where the draw can be easy to get.

Do you notice something that all these have in common? That all these are analysis techniques against an opponent! If you're analyzing chess positions for the sake of it, if no game is actually being played, if no opponent will send you a move and you don't have to use what you have to pick a move in a position, then you can spend you life doing 1. and fooling yourself into thinking that you have analyzed a position to the point you're certain it's 0.00, when in reality, if you played that position in an actual game, your opponent could play a move that you were missing that throws all your work to the waste bin, and that turns you into the defender, without chances to win and with a though job trying to find a drawing line.

After that happens you can check if Contempt could have seen the move, if after refuting a few Contempt lines the move raised to the top. But it can't happen analyzing in a vacuum, a game needs to be happening for the truth to be known.
