What are GM Ding Liren chances of becoming Carlsen Next challenger ?

Post by Chessqueen »

After winning the GCT at london by beating MVL what are GM Ding Liren chances of becoming Carlsen next Challenger? I believe GM Ding Liren is way ahead of Caruana in total points? Can somebody explain to me what is the system used to determine the Next Challenger of Carlsen ? And how many more elimination tournaments like this one there will be in the future https://en.chessbase.com/post/gct-finals-2019-day-6

Ding Liren established himself as one of the most likely aspirants to give Magnus Carlsen a run for his money in a hypothetical World Championship match. At this point, it is safe to say that Carlsen, Ding and Fabiano Caruana are on a class of their own — it is no coincidence that they are the three players to have maintained a 2800+ rating consistently throughout the year

Qualification process is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Che ... nship_2020.

There is one more event in the FIDE Grand Prix (Jerusalem), which is part of the process.

Caruana is qualified automatically. Ding is very likely to qualify for the Candidates tournament, if he hasn't already.

I am not a big fan of the current system, because knock-out tournaments can produce weird outcomes (this is how we got FIDE World Champion Ponomariov at one point). But it is what they have. Ding is a great player and would be a worthy challenger to Carlsen, IMO.

Thanks for answering, and thanks to all other people for making me realize that I am still human and made a mistake for NOT placing this post on the Chess Thinkers Forum ( A place for chess players to talk about what interests them beyond Chess Engines )
