Dual EPYC

Post by Werewolf »

Does anyone have experience with this enough to recommend a workstation manufacturer? I'm looking for a large manufacturer at tier 1 level - such as Dell - but I'm really struggling to find a company which sells dual EPYC machines.

The only feedback I have is that it's hard to get 2 EPYCs in a case and Dell don't go with AMD at all.

Bizarre.

You could try Broadberry https://www.broadberry.co.uk/amd-epyc-workstations

CyberStation Performance - Dual AMD EPYC
This Broadberry CyberStation is powered by dual AMD EPYC processors, has a maximum RAM capacity of 2TB and can be configured with up to 8x SATA/SAS hard drives.

There are a boatload of manufacturers.
I don't know what country you live in,
Good reviews(whe whole sites, not just individual articles):
https://www.servethehome.com/amd-epyc-7 ... s-of-rome/
https://hexus.net/tech/reviews/cpu/1332 ... er/?page=3
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=recent

One sample link (put the word configure into your searches)
https://www.avadirect.com/Supermicro-A- ... e/13005933

search with these words:
amd epyc workstation configure

Thanks.

I live in the UK so most of those would be unavailable. I'm really looking for a tier 1 company with global reach (Dell / HP / Lenovo etc). I may be being too picky but in the past I've been a bit burnt by the more regional distributors.

Broadberry is interesting - I don't know much about them - and similarly Workstation Specialists might be interesting. I bought a Dual Xeon from them before but it was horribly loud.

If you choose a regional system builder you can be/make sure they use common
standard parts like case/cooling/MB/PSU and replace them by yourself. This may
not be the case with tier 1 prebuild systems...

True, but I trust something like a Dell Precision.

What's bothering me at the moment is companies going bust and I don't really want to fiddle with an expensive machine. The local ones tend to be "back to base" as their support option and I just don't have the time anymore.

Most really high end systems are built for a computer room. They have squirrel cage blowers that spin like a router bit and sound like a jet engine taking off when you are giving the machine a workout. Since they are not intended for home use, almost all of them are like that. There are a few that are specially made to be quiet, and all of them are workstation format. Another thing you can do is buy a soundproof box for it.
Those boxes have temperature governed cooling and will quiet the machines to where you can hold a conversation or watch television in the same room.
Example:

You have to make sure that the enclosure is deep enough for your server. All of them are 19 inch rack mounts, but some are not deep enough for a really long server.

I have brought all my Servers from Broadberry and have had no problems so far in the 10 years I have been using them.

As all mine are in a server rack in a server room I have no idea on how noisy their desktops/tower are.

Broadberry do offer 1,2, and 3 year on-site NBD support and also 4 hour response on-site support as well as their standard 3 year back to base support.
