In this example the losing move is clearly not contained in the original post. I wonder if this was done on purpose. In this position:

[d]rnbqk2r/pp1p1ppp/3b1n2/2pP4/8/2N2N2/PP2PPPP/R1BQKB1R b KQkq - 2 6

assuming that it actually occurred in the game, 6. … Bc7? is a blunder at best. At worst black is almost assuredly lost after this move. Both 6. … O-O and 6. … Qe7 are much better moves. This begs the question, which moves were book moves and which moves were engine generated moves?

The full game is included in a post in the thread. For your convenience, it's copied below. The first five moves were from a book. It seems that Stockfish searched to depth 32 before choosing to play 6...Bc7.

Zenmastur wrote: Sat Jul 18, 2020 5:29 am It amazes me that after several years of NN engine play we still have people posting example blitz games and intimating that the game posted is some how “proof” of the superiority of one engine, or engine type, over another or making other similarly ludicrous claims.
Walter's "claim" was simply, that 8.e4 is best move and that LC0 found it in a blitz game.
Period.
How I understood, he didn't say or want to show any elo- wise superiority of LC0 by the games given, which is well known anyhow as for all rating lists, even if the distance of measurable leadership is not so big and depends much in used hardware, TC, engine- pool and openings used for testing, but that all is of no interest as for the series "Engine Crackers" in Glarean, which is a very fine collection of positions of interest.
The problem I have with this is that you can find games where almost any engine has played a so called “novelty” in a blitz game. If you play enough engine games from weird positions it's bound to happen due to the high volume of games computers can generate. I don't attach any more significance to it than that.
peter wrote: Sat Jul 18, 2020 7:31 am 8.e4! is as well as a novelty, I found it at chessbase online just in 2 games of not very high Elo- range, in none of them the point of 8.e4!, 9.Qc2! was played, so one ended up drawn and the other one even with 0-1, those two games are of no special interest neither, but that LC0 found 8.e4! and 9.Qc2! (which I pointed out in my first answer- posting to be the second one key move ) in a blitz game, is really amazing, isn't it?
Glarean wrote: Sat Jul 18, 2020 8:50 am You have a misconception of "novelty" in chess. Whether a move has ever been played by any amateur anywhere in the world is not interesting.

In official tournament chess the position before 8.e4 has often been played. It is a fact that 8.e4 has not yet been played in professional chess by grandmasters.
Well, I disagree with your definition of a novelty. First, Grandmaster is a tittle held for life regardless of current playing strength. So, it's a flawed measure of strength at best and GM's are certainly no where near as strong as top engines. So, if playing strength of the protagonists is a requirement for a move to be a novelty no human game would ever qualify. My opinion is the person or entity that played it is COMPLETELY irrelevant. The idea that motivated the move is the ONLY relevant issue. If the idea is one not seen in the position before then it qualifies as a novelty. i.e. it's a de facto novel idea and it doesn't need any ones personal seal of approval. It stands on it's own merits.
peter wrote: Thu Jul 16, 2020 8:35 pm Very interesting, Walter.
But 9.Qe2 in LC0- output deserves a ? I'd say.
9.Qc2 in Brainfish- output and in game is obviously much better. Maybe that's why evals in this one line are some higher and more correct, aren't they?
Really??

I've analyzed the positions after both 9.Qe2 and 9.Qc2 and I think you would be hard pressed to show that 9.Qe2 is a mistake. In fact, I think Qe2 is probably the superior move. SF-dev evaluates it at over +3. So, if you are evaluating the move 8.e4 by the follow up move then games that continue 8. … Nxe4 9.Qe2 that occurred before this game was played, should be considered as the “novel” game/idea and not the one cited in this thread.

Could you show some output of your SF evaluating 9.Qe2 over +3?
If you get such a high eval at all with contempt near 0, you have looked at too short a hardware- time of pondering, or you mean an eval after some more moves forward not being checked exactly for black side. Talking about evals at the root- positions +3 with SF, that's something I'd really like to see together with an output- line.

Here's what I get after some Forward-Backward of lines after both moves.

Again started with full hash after that analysis and 9.Qe2 (?!):

[d]rnbqk2r/pp1p1ppp/3P4/b1p5/4n3/2N2N2/PP2QPPP/R1B1KB1R b KQkq - 0 1

+/- (1.53) Tiefe: 50/92 00:08:10 9524MN

I don't have to tell you, it doesn't really matter, that the end of that output- line is won for White too, do I? Of course you can't rely on output- lines of such length for so many moves. Just to mention it, even if you know so for sure.

Brainfish instead of SF dev. just because of the for my CPU good compile, 24 threads of 12x3GHz, 32G hash.
Sorry for german abbrevations, forgot to switch.

And here after 9.Qc2(!): (take care, that the engine has "seen" at least 14.Bc4 after 13...Nc6, 14th white move is to be found, that's not to be expected at once at position after 9th, SF at root position sees a lesser 14th move, therefore underestimating the line to 13...Nc6, having that refuted it changes to 13...0-0) again started with full hash:

I always use contempt set to zero. As far as depth is concerned I use standard CC type analysis to what ever depth is required to resolve the position. IIRC the longest sub-searched used during the above analysis was an over night run that went to depth 73 seldepth 128 (73/128) using partial 7-man TB's and 64Gb of TT. I rarely record the engine output for even a single search and it makes even less sense because there are many, many sub-searches used to get this output, likely more than a 100 in this case, but I don't keep track of the number of different searches used.

Because the number of searches and the search times are so long the final output search depth listed doesn't have a lot of meaning. Trying to compare it to a single search of a given depth is almost meaningless.

Sorry, that's no kind of engine- output I know.
How do you get this output of SF's, as for the dependency of time, depth and line?
Which GUI?

Following that line, after 20 moves there's still no +3 to be reached by SF with short pondering.

The first deviation from my output- line I gave, is at 11.g4, that might be an enhancement, but having got that, SF changes to 10...Bxc3 instead of ...Qb6, and g4 doesn't work as well as before anymore.

However you got that line and eval, I'd be interested, which one you'd get, letting the engine run the same way you did before with about the same over- night- time after 9.Qc2.
:)
Anyhow, thanks for the big hardware- time you already invested. How I understood, you had some kind of combination of outplay and standalone- computing, an IdEA- project probably, right? With this I don't have so much experience, for results like that I prefer rather Fritz- Deep Position Analysis, that gives evals of the lines it builds up at their endings too, yet you cannot compare such evals to the ones, an engine gives at a root- position.

If you want to end up with the same or similar evaluation as given in this line it's better to start at the end of the line and let it run until you get to about the same depth as the listed depth. Then back up through the line, allowing the engine to reach a similar depth at every move, until you reach the root. Then you can let it run as long as you like. There are much quicker ways to get to the same evaluation but they are much more complex to explain. I normally truncate my analysis to some "reasonable" length. In this case I didn't because I was in the middle of re-analyzing the PV from the leaf node. "Normally" I would have truncated tha last 15 moves or so as they were not part of the "last" main search. They are however, very useful when you're prepairing for or conducting a reverse analysis.

You can get to the same evaluation by forward analysis only but I don't recommend it. You're unlikely to get there with just a couple of minutes of analysis regardless of the hardware used.

There is no possible way for me to diagnose why you aren't getting the same evaluation as I do without me seeing how you are analyzing. The most likely cause is lack of depth, insufficient TT, and table bases.

Not quite as long as you wanted due to the PV changing multiple times near the root but it looks something like this:

I didn't truncate this one because it's not finished yet. It needs one more reverse pass to pass muster. I don't expect the eval to change in any significant way, but the PV is likely be different once this is done.

But not for letting engine give an output at the root position only, but to let it run a combination of outplay and backward analysis obviously, that's what I thought it to be. Fritz does this with Deep Position Analysis, IdEA hat it's own ways, chessbase- GUI too, any of these automatic analysis- tools are guiding the search of the engine according to certain parameters you set. Output of GUIs summarized after some given time in such ways can't be compared to the one of the engine itself at standalone- computing on the root position.

That's what you said already too, if you think such simple engine- output with time, depth and eval "meaningless" as you called it, ok, but it's the normal way of comparing engine- outputs, output- lines and evals with each other.
Zenmastur wrote: Sun Jul 19, 2020 12:59 am Not quite as long as you wanted
And not at all as long as you told, you did let the "output" of the other one position run. Since my last posting about 1 hour and a half was over, when you came along with the next one. The other one you did let overnight, if I understood right.
Yet the '"eval" of your "output" for Qc2 was already some higher then mine was, so the difference of numeric height of the two methods shows up with this one move too.

Whatever method of analysis you prefer, if you want to judge a root position with engine- evals, you always have to get the root- position evaluated by the engine. Hardware helps, time helps, good lines known already at the beginning from other games can help, GUIs can help with automatic combination of Forward- Backward and MultiPV can help, other engines can help and last but not least you can help with good moves of your own along the lines analysed.

The limiting factor is always the engine and the hardware- time, with which hash is filled with good entries that are kept more or lesss good back to root position.

And so the output- eval always counts as much as the number of moves along the output- lines being best moves.
Getting GUI- lines by automatic outplay evaluated can't be compared to lines nor evals given by the engin at the root positions.

Don't really now, what ScidvsPC does in its kind of automated analysis, still guess it's about the same as with Fritz DPA, the evals are filled in at the end of the lines, those are end- evals, no evals of the root position of the engine.

So whether we start talking about lines of interactice analysis after certain numbers of moves, or we keep talking about engine- evals at the root position, than we have to compare engine- outputs at the root- postions with same engines, comparable hardware- time and comparable lines, but not GUI- artefacts against engine- outputs.

I admit 11.g4 after 9.Qe2 f5 10.Bg5 Qb6 is better than 11. 0-0-0 probably, which was in the output line of Brainfish, yet 10...Qb6 is probably suboptimal too.
Will have a closer look, 1.Qe2 might be better for this, than I thought before, 1.Qc2 yet still has the edge to me.
Will try to prove that in a way to be objectivied.
Peter.

But the task here is quite different, in fact it is:
Find an AB engine that can win this position against Stockfish 240620 without 8.e4!
Well, dear Walter, than have a look at this one game between the komodo- setting you spumed (prefering 8.e4 at once too, King Saftey 150 instead of 75, Dynamism 200 instead of 122, Contempt 25, Syzygys swichted off) and SF.

I didn't let komodo play 8.e4, which it would have done at this TC, but started from 8.Bg5, one of the moves, that's being played here most oftenly.
SF 240620 I don*'t have, I took Brainfish 300620, just 6 days older, not using book, so a normal SF with a good compile as for my CPU, using 6men Syzygys, contempt 0.
Of 24 threads of the 12x3GHz CPU each engine used 12, ponder on, 2G hash each:

I don't think so. Without 8.e4 the position of equally strong engines is almost impossible to win.

I can really understand that the professional grandmasters have been doing their opening studies with LeelaChess for a long time.
Stockfish & Friends are not that important in this field anymore...

Completely bogus statement. Engines are tools. Skill depends on how one use it. No analyser uses default settings always not even in leela.

New Crackers have been added again:

One of them is particularly interesting (Blitz-Game Lc0 0.25.1 t60-3972 vs Stockfish 240620 1-0):

Will have a closer look, 1.Qe2 might be better for this, than I thought before, 1.Qc2 yet still has the edge to me.

Guess I simply underestimated 9.Qe2.
...f5 10.Bg5 Bxc3 isn't better for Black than ...Qb6.

So Black's already lost after 8.e4 with 9.Qe2 as well as with 9.Qc2. With which of these two moves Black's losing more quickly, is still hard to say, seems to me now, 9.Qe2 might have the edge yet , so you could give 9.Qc2 a !?, even if it's winning by force too.
