Hi

First the current standings:

1. CT800 1.40 x64 11/14
2. Dr.Deeb 10/14
3. Gosu 0.16 8.5/14
4. Tigran 2.4n x64 8/14
5. Patzer 3.80 5.5/14
6. KnighDreamer 3.3 5.5/14
7. Patzer 3.61l Leiden 5.5/14
8. Simplex 0.9.8 x64 1/14

Surprisingly,Simplex took a full point from Gosu for the first time in this competition :D

Now it was yet again a Nimzowitch-Larsen attack chess game which drained my brains cells out of my skull ....

Maybe one of the best games I've ever played and definitely the best one I've ever played with this opening system ....

It's late now and I must go to sleep so I'll post the game for now and tomorrow I'll write a few comments and thoughts regarding the way I played and the impressions I got from Gosu's playing style ....

Next opponent is Amy 0.8.7b Which plays

Cheers,
Dr.D

As I promised a few words about my game with Gosu 0.16 not with the aim to brag about my victory but rather to enjoy watching a game and understanding the nature of some of the moves that were played ....

10. f4 The whole concept of this opening is using the a1-h8 diagonal and the f file to attack the black king. Here another advantage for white was taking the black knight at c6 leaving the a7 pawn isolated which will bring big headaches to black ....

11... Bg4 A weak move losing tempo and helping the white queen to get to the king side preparing the attack ....

14... h5 Why distorting the black king pawn structure unprovoked ?
Beyond me ....

18. a4 Blocking the black pawn on the a file and practically isolating it allowing the bishop on b2 to hold her under fire ....

21. Nc4 preparing the knight to get moved to the king side to start the attack ....

24. Rae1 moving the heavy pieces to the king side again with bad intentions for black ....

27. Bc3 And one of the black rocks is occupied to defend the pawn on the a5 square ....

30. Ref1 The very essence of the opening strategy to open the f file and launch the attack ....

31... f5?? Why worsening the already bad black position I wonder ....

33. Rf4 Now this is a move I rarely make exchanging a major piece of mine with a minor piece but I made it considering the fact that I am a one pawn up and to eliminate one the 2 bishops which are extremely powerful obstructing the attack to expand to it's full potential ....

35... Qd6 Aha trying to exchange the queens to lighten the white attack on the black king.Won't happen ....

40. Re7 Deploying the attacking pieces deep into the enemy's territory ....

42. Nd7 The start of the end of the story ....

43... c4 The black king is already under heavy attack and the black is trying to counter attack on the queen side showing the fact that a supposedly 2400 chess engine has no clue at all about the position on the board ....

46. Nf6+ and the material imbalance is restored in a winning position ....

49. Qxb6 Now is optimal for white to exchange the queens in a superior position ....

53. Ke3 The white bishop is very powerful on d4 with no possibility for black to give a check to the white king on the e file ....

57. c3 The black pawn on a5 is going nowhere so no rush to take it ....

59. Bc7 and the two seemingly 2 passed black pawns on the other side of the board are going nowhere ....

60. d4 It's all over for black ....

So my impression even though it's based on two games is that Gosu has a bad king safety evaluation as most of the chess engines in this Elo range of the rating list and is definitely a little bit weaker than 2400 Elo ....

Just to mention also that it's a problematic chess engine technically speaking as it's hard to load in most of the GUIs and it gets in conflict with some engines like Dragon by freezing and not playing a single move after the opening phase ....

Cheers,
Dr.D

Hi

Amy 0.8.7b is a relatively solid chess engine which plays a sound chess game ....

I remember that it was a tactical beast like CT800 1.40 but it turns out that it's not ....

The two games against it were draw ....

The first game was a cool line of the Old Indian Defense which transferred quickly into an open position which made me feel that lose the game because it's commonly known that it's an extremely dangerous to play against a computer in such positions but things went smoothly at the end....

The second game was a completely an unknown line to me of the Nimzowitsch-Larsen attack in which I applied general chess knowledge to play the game and although the position looks deadly drawish,it wasn't easy at all to equalize the game which was a harder one than the previous one ....

Chers,
Dr.D

Hi

Dragon 4.6 the french monster destroyed me in the first game as I tired to build a solid defense but at the end I blundered heavily and lost the game .....

In the second game I steered the 1. b3 opening into a draw position hoping to outplay it in the end game abut yet again due to poor late middle game skills I only managed to escape with half a point ....

Regardless of whay I wrote above,Dragon 4.6 performance is relatively weak against other chess engines but seemingly tuned anti-human when programmed maybe ....

Standings so far:

OK, thanks, at least Tigran and Dragon were available from that list. I don't have time for multi-hour games but I thought I might try some 10' +5" games with them just to get an idea of the level. In general fast time limits favor the engines so I probably won't do well, but at least I should get some idea.

Cheers,
Dr.D
