New moderators who are willing to clean up CTF stand ready to do so.

Give them a chance.
That is the same moderators who promised the same thing 11 years ago, when people complained about exactly the same problems as now, (see threads unearthed by Guenther), right?

I don't think it is the moderators. It is the crowd. As someone else remarked: there is no discussion there. Just people shouting their (often extremist) opinions, and when someone expresses disagreement, just shout the same thing again and shout it louder, or resort to insults and name calling right away. The proposed moderator that is promising to 'clean up' things is one of the worst examples of this: he regularly calls for assassination of world leaders, and keeps repeating that ad nauseam against any reasonable objection. Last time he was moderator he had to be impeached almost immediately for gross abuse of his powers. He is part of the problem, and now we should expect him to solve it?

Like I said in my first post, I see little upside to having CTF when the same topics can be discussed elsewhere, with a bigger community of people with more expertise on the specific topics. At best the new mods succeed and there's one more decent place among many on the web to discuss non-chess things - a neutral outcome. At worst they fail and CTF continues more or less as is - a negative outcome. I prefer the guaranteed neutral of simply removing it.

...and to hell with families. Why talk to them when you can find someone somewhere on the internet to talk to? If people NEED specialised help, OF COURSE they want to seek it - but most of the time, it's nice to speak with family about things. Family is the most important thing in your life.

Did you miss Peter Berger's experience I posted a link to in this thread earlier today?

I respect your intelligence, but I think you've missed something: if you watch ANYONE for long enough, eventually they'll show you their good side.

Thorsten is a good man at heart, and it has been many years since he last moderated. People change. Every one of us changes every day. You are not someone who destroys everything. You are someone who HAS destroyed SOMETHING in the past. EVERY ONE OF US IS A FLAWED HUMAN BEING.

I have not a sliver of doubt that Thorsten will do a good job, and he will clean out the unwanted posts. I have faith in him.

You are not 'family' and CTF isn't either, sorry, no further abuse of analogies will help here.
Moreover I believe your posts in this thread are just there for artificially prolonging it.
(per definitionem a kind of trolling)

To enlighten us all on specifics, I invite these potential new moderators to elaborate on how they will do so here.

Yeah, because they eventually die.

Problem is that I expect to die earlier. Might not be able to last another 11 years.

Perhaps a better idea is to do it the other way around: let the thoroughly evil hgm close CTF now, and then watch him until he finally shows his good side, and reopens it!

This looks like a "shut up" to me. Given that CCC regulars can vote in the CTF election, CTF regulars should be allowed to speak about the election in CCC.

Why even have any talkchess forums to begin with? Just talk to your (actual) family about everything... You talk to different people for different reasons.

That single anecdote is just that, a single anecdote. An online gaming community I know banned an active, but disruptive, member and moved on just fine. Neither of these accounts mean anything.

It is a sign you annoy them. Given that they vote, it indeed a very smart move to use your right to do that.
