The source for the engine should be the same as the paid one, but as mentioned in an earlier post its suggested that the NN that was recently released is an older weaker version compared to the commercial one.

I looked into both nets with a HEX-editor and they are definitly different!

How did you do that? The official release has no separate net, it's embedded.

I have a feeling that sales for FF2 will be dismal, and I wonder if they will break even after marketing cost.

I agree, although the Fritz brand does have some loyalty. Impossible to know.

I cloned the code base when this was post and able to compiled under Linux. Actually now I think about it you have a point. Because even if you can compile it, its useless unless you have the weights file

In the meantime, the github link of DanielUranga includes also the weights file.
Although I doubt it is the same weights file offered by Chessbase, I compiled the published code from github and it works:

Hi, thanks: Whats the difference between FatFritz2.exe and FatFritz2mycompile.exe.
Whats the version of the included FatFritz2_v1.bin? Is it official or the one from github that some say is older version?

There is an updated version of FF2 (called update1) (source code on github), where the net is a separate file. Because the first release with the nnue-net being part of the binaries was a gpl license violation.
This updated version of FF2 can use the commercial net or the weaker net from the github site of FF2.

No. Only the commercial version of FF2 has the strong FF2 net. The ratinglists (CEGT, CCRL and me (SPCC)) got this version for testing. The net, which can be downloaded on the FF2-github website is weaker. Of course. Otherwise nobody would buy FF2 anymore.
