It appears that Bc4, Bg5 and Be3 are all pretty close.

Thanks Dann.
After some struggling and massaging i got this to work under Linux.

I claim no license, nor can I.
Stockfish is GPL, so all my changes must also be GPL.

There is a new version that turns of contempt completely.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Rmmi0N ... sp=sharing

I also plan to analyze 170 Blackmar-Diemar Gambit positions at about one hour each or so.

I do make one request, which is that I prefer you use my strange names for the binaries.

The reason for this request is that they will not become confused with the official binaries, which would be a bad thing.

These are the positions I am going to analyze.
Now, many of them are not Blackmar-Diemar Gambit positions at all.
Some are interior book nodes on the way to the gambit, and others are offshoots that are likely to happen if you or your opponent appears to be on their way to the BD Gambit. I guess you will not want to analyze this set. But you might like to know what I am doing in case you want to avoid redundant efforts. I will publish the results, if anyone wants them, when I am done.

1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. e4 Nxe4 is nice if you can get it, but beware - white can play 1. d4 Nf6 2. f3 d5 3. e4 dxe4 4. Nc3 and you've been tricked into the dxe4 variation.
Black doesn't have to play along. Instead of 3...dxe4 he can meet 3.e4 with 3...e5 when 4.dxe5 runs into 4...Nxe4.
Good point todd. I think 2.f3 has some kind of surprise value and should be considered by black. But armed with stockfish we see that black can practically force the draw with 3..e5 4.dxe5 Nxe4 5.fxe4 Qh4+ or has several other good options. For psychological reasons, I currently prefer 2..c5 3.d5 e6 4.e4 (4.c4 b5) exd5 5.exd5 d6 with a roughly equal position according to stockfish.

I have made a stockfish branch for the essence of your logging code. I currently don't know why i really need this :D , but anyway here it is:
https://github.com/beyondCritics/Stockf ... /searchlog
It is tested only under linux.
Maintaining a git branch has an advantage, which i consider as very important: You can always make a branch from the latest version with a rebase and maybe some editing.

it minimax material. thats all. a game of chess is not about maximizing material but about mating opponent king. so why should stockfish help here ???

1. the original line is
1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe 3.Nc3 Nf6 f3

and not the transposition you name.

if 3.Nc3 e5 then of course 4.f3 and not the weaker 4.dxe

Stockfish can have positional scores that are enormous.

You are right, of course, that most engines have a problem with gambits. But I have found that engines can understand even a sound full piece gambit, given enough time.

I guess that a gambit that requires zugzwang pathways would stymie almost every engine, but people would probably have problems with it too.

The engines today do a lot more than counting wood. But gambits do offer a big problem for engines, along with zugzwang positions that are not in the endgame; long, connected, rammed pawn chains; fortress positions, and a few other things. Even fairly simple closed positions require a lot of depth.

But given enough time, I suspect that Houdini, Stockfish and Komodo can solve almost every position (though often with the wrong score).
For difficult positions, I do not suspect that engines have a good idea until the depth is over 40.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.
