I think there's a file there that has the key?

Well, a thought: Did yuo ever have the trial version installed?
In that case, that could be the problem.

I removed my old key-requesting version on this comp, since the key didn't work anymore anyway, after a hardware change, and I didn't wanted to bother Joachim once again (or rather, had more important things to do),
and they all work nicely.

Fruit 2.2.1 (as well as 05/11/03) works fine under Arena without any key.

Same under CB, here. So I guess the issue is something else - trial version was mentioned...Sounds to me like something was left from it.

LOL - had the problem when GambitFruit was released by Ryan ;)
It's more or less the same parameter-window in 051103 as in GF 4bx, and yes, larger resolution was the answer.

What happened in this case, as in many others, is -are- just an anecdote of what is going on in the global economy, a portent of things to come. To say it straight and simple, we are beginning to surpass, for the first time in history, the era of an economy based in poverty and/or limited resources to supply needs. It has been on that ground that all systems has came to life, including profit economy. Internet is the first area of life -even if still limited- where an economy based in free gifts and cooperation as the engine to propel human motivation is on the way. In that context, profitability becomes more and more difficult to implement.
OK, this is like sci-fi, but it the deepest background of commercial stuff becoming freeware

Yes, I agree it is sad in a way especially for those of us who have
been interested in chess playing programs going back to the early
days. In my case, I remember people parting with a full week's
wages for a dedicated machine that would have a playing strength
of elo 1300, and was liable to break down at any moment. Now a
program that is offering genuine GM strength is being offered to us
on a plate. It's owner has given up!
Ed Schroder threw in the towel, Richard Lang and Christiphe
Theron are reduced to offering auto downloads of handheld
programs for a pittance. Let's face it, only a tiny handful of people
are interested in paying for a program that will outrate the one
they have had for years, and don't have a hope in hell of beating.
How long will Rybka last?

Fabien has many hobbies but I would not assume that he is throwing in the towel in computer chess. It is more likely that this is just the beginning of something even better to come.

Are you still on the Fruit team Ryan. If so maybe Fabien will bring
on a stronger program. He maybe keep the code to himself next
time. :) :)
