I think I will not try further that way, as I have installed polyglot anyway on the server.
Now I have a problem setting the UCI options for Stockfish (I downloaded the last development version from today - @Marco: is this ok for you? I mean the whole thing I plan).
I would like to participate, but I'm not sure how to do it. I just launch Winboard with those arguments, and it takes care of the rest? Do I need to sign up first or anything like that? Is there a way I can practice connecting to make sure it works, and that my engine works, etc?
No, after you launch WinBoard like that it opens a text window in which you can communicate with the Internet Chess Server. This will start asking for your username and password. (You can give any name not yet in use without passwoed to login as guest in order to try things out, but for the tournament you need to have a registered account.)
Then at some point the tourney will be announced, and you would have to type
mam join 1
(assuming the announced tourney had number 1) to inform the tournament manager ("mamer") that you want to participate.
The rest should be automatic, BUT: when something goes wrong (you or your opponent disconnect, so the game is adjourned, or where not connected when the games stated, so no game was started at all, or your engine hangs and you have to disconnect to restart it) you would need to start or resume the game by hand, issuing the appropriate command
Good turnout this month, with several new participants! Unfortunately I forgot to joint micro-Max, because I had miscounted the number of logged-in players.
How strange can it be, Nightmare beat Stockfish but could not get more than a draw against RuyDos. It all depends upon the opening, RuyDos played with a good book and I had the impression that Stockfish played without book. Anyway, this is a nice tournament to get an impression how your engine performs. Thanks to Harm Geert.
For the scalability: I saw between 3 and 9 Mnps, which I think it's disappointing for 32 threads. Maybe I missed something in the configuration (cache was 2 GB, but for 5+1 should be enough).
I don't know but for 32 threads I would expect at least something like 35000 knps with Stockfish. Was this really 32 threads or was it hyperthreading or crippled AMD threads?

Yes, credit goes to José Manuel Morán, my book preparer and chess expert. Actually, the book is taken directly from Ruy-López, our program from the 90s.
