Re: Pioneer
Pioneer was more an expression of desires, like the new man of the comunism, than a real program, It was never done in code. It was a bunch of musings by great Botv.

I want a superconny in a wooden computer. The program represents the first commercial implementation of the attack map / offset map move generating strategy proposed by former World Chess Champion Mikhail Botvinnik and subsequently refined by myself for faster move generation as pieces come off the board.

This really isn't "knowledge". It is "tactics" which the search provides...mclane wrote:More knowledge
On my MacBook, Crafty finds this in 2 seconds at depth 20. Eval goes from a draw to +6.00

But in 1984 super constellation could only see it with knowledge.
KnowledgeKittinger and Scott McDonald in Computer Chess Digest Annual 1984 on Novag Constellation [26] :
The Novag Constellation programs represent a significant evolutionary step in the development of microcomputer chess programs. The program represents the first commercial implementation of the attack map / offset map move generating strategy proposed by former World Chess Champion Mikhail Botvinnik and subsequently refined by myself for faster move generation as pieces come off the board.

Re: Pioneer
You HAVE to follow the checks/captures to see the win of material, otherwise you throw a bishop away. Many found it in the early 80's. We certainly did. There were even long discussions about it in r.g.c.c as well as some notes printed in the JICCA.mclane wrote:But in 1984 super constellation could only see it with knowledge.

If you want to argue knowledge was used to follow the RIGHT checks and such, that's possible. But it is most definitely a purely tactical position that can be solved with pure material-only evaluation, very quickly.

If nothing else, Skipper produces neat-looking slopes in its analysis output. Probably looks great on larger phones, a bit jaggy on desktops.
Henk, have you considered incorporating an anti-aliasing function into your engine?
