Hi Thorsten,

it's a long time since I've used DOS-Box (because I usually run such programs on my DOS/Win98 notebook), but 105 cycles is ways to slow!
With Ctrl-F12 you can increase the cycles - here's a site with a few more performance settings for DOS-Box:

Also make sure dosbox is using a dynamic core

http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Dosbox.conf# ... c_.7C_auto

It should be the default but...

Well, my hardware is not as fast. It's a outdated Q6600@3,00Ghz.

I'm using Free-DOS 1.1, installed with default settings of VMware (MS-DOS profile).

freedos is no emulator, isn't it ?
you boot your machine with a CD and run dos from the scratch.

while dosbox or dfend are emulators of dos running under windows, that might explain the speed difference of course.

wchess -h1200000 -LI -V0 -P3
Thanks. Maybe it works; Wchess 1.05 does not give a response about the hash size (I seem to remember 1.04 did but I'm not sure). Level and variety (=randomness) preset works, the "P" parameter is ignored but can be set in the interface.

It seems to me that Wchess 1.05 if set to "easy" (= ponder off), it still makes the ponder calculations but doesn't use them. But the DOSBox emulation can be temporarily stopped with [Alt]-[F12] if required.

No dosbox with dynamic core is not an emulator. It executes on bare metal.

But apparently VMWare + FreeDos is still faster than the virtualization in dosbox.

No, it a full OS and it feels like a real DOS 8-)
Look at http://www.freedos.org/

Technical stuff: http://www.freedos.org/freedos/about/

Yes, that's what i did with my VM. It will be installed on the harddisk.

On my machine wchess+freedos+virtualbox seems to be a little under 50% faster than wchess+dosbox with dynamic core.
