I am using AVG, but AVG becomes infected by this virus and I can't activate it while another anti virus software that I have never heard of or loaded starts scanning my computer.

So there is another program you haven't heard of that starts scanning your computer?

From the information you've given, it sounds like a fake AV. There are many different variants of it and it is very hard to totally eradicate. If it is not totally eradicated it may re-download some components from the internet.

I have had good luck booting into safe mode (with networking) and then running Malwarebytes and Spybot to remove it. If you do a search on the internet for 'fake av' you will find lots of information. Most antivirus' are not very good at removing it. Norton has developed a program that is not a part of their av, but is aimed at removing it (the name is not coming to me right now).

P.S. it is very likely that the fake av was not totally removed/cleaned from your first infection.

Sounds like a false positive to me, never had any problems with Critter.

I don't think it is a false positive because the computer becomes inoperable. I can not access anything because it tells me most files are corrupted.

Tom,this sounds like a worm infection to me....
Can you please go to the ESET online scanner and make an online scan

I have already erased my hard disk and restored the system. So the worm would be gone right?

Is there a better anti-virus than avg? I have heard Norton is better.

No,stay away from Norton,once installed in your operation system,the PC is no longer yours

ESET NOD,Avast! or Kaspersky are some of the good programs that I recommend....

Kaspersky and ESET NOD32 seem to score the best on tests from what I looked at. Dunno about Avast. Definitely DON'T get Norton, it's worse than a virus.
