What version and date of your GPSShogi you installed?
The version number appears to be 20111117.1.1-win32, dated Nov. 15, 2011.

Larry a friend of mine talked with Mr. Tomoyuki Kaneko, who is one of the members of GPS-Shogi developer team. And he made the previous version become available to play at 81dojo at http://81dojo.com/ So Larry can play with it now. Mr. Kaneko will update it to the latest version later.

How to use 81 dojo videos are here. Kifu(Gamerecord) will be saved automatically and you can download it anytime you like. Does that help?

Arghh! It seems that some of the latest code refactoring I did had broken UCI2WB for Shogi. (A patch to correct for a Shogi bug in a by now ancient WinBoard version contained a statement if(move[4] != LINEFEED) move[4] = '+'; to make sure no invalid promotion characters would be sent to the engine. But after refactoring, moves were no longer terminated by LINEFEED but by NULLCHAR, so any move sent to the engine would be suffixed by "+ove". Which most Shogi engines, including GPS Shogi, did not like at all...)

I replaced that broken UCI2WB version now in the WinBoard 4.6.2 installer package. With this new install it is possible to run GPS Shogi under WinBoard (like it was in older WB installs) using

Engine file (*.exe):

UCI2WB

Parameters:

-s gpsusi.exe "C:/Program Files/gpsshogi/smp" " byoyomi %d"

(The last parameter is unfortunately needed as a work-around for a non-compliancy in GPS Shogi, which does not understand the USI winc and binc commands, to run it with incremental time controls. The need for it prevents easy install by simply pointing out the engine's .exe file, and ticking the 'UCCI/USI' checkbox, which would automatically invoke UCI2WB with -s option in a WinBoard configured for Shogi (as opposed to Xiangqi, where it would invoke UCCI2WB instead).)

Yeah, this should be definitely the best sollution.
So also others can watch the game, the game could be discussed later (playing variations, showing arrows is all possible on 81dojo). :D

I found out that GPS-Shogi ===Title AI-bot ===Rank 7 Dan ===Rated 1941
and Ponanza is also a 7 Dan=== Rated as 1759.

PS: My conclusion is that Mr. Larry Kaufman could have a very tough time playing at a time control of less than 3 hours per side, but I could also be wrong

What hardware is GPS using on 81dojo?
Why do you say Yonenaga is higher than Shimizu, Kosaku and Shinoda? Did Yonenaga win any games in the last 2 years? The moves Yonenaga played against Bonkras shows Yonenaga is not playing at the professional level. I think Yonenaga is weaker than Shimizu, Kosaku and Shinoda.

All that you have to do is register and you can even use the same password as you are using here. but anyway you will see all the information about GPS-Shogi and Ponanza which is another program that came from Bonanza but much weaker

"Restarting the computer helped somewhat, in that now I can start a game and the computer will respond from its book. But once I leave book, it just hangs up."

I've made a short test on two computers:
the Windows 7 - 32bit (virtual machine, only 1GB memory) seems working
but with the other one, Windows XP, also only 1GB memory I have exactly the same problems

About testing:
(Check the environment variable OSL_HOME, which have to point to the directory containing "smp" and "data", so using different versions from a command-line, you have to set for example
Code:
set OSL_HOME=C:\Programme\gpsshogi
By the way: BCMGames is doing it automaticaly, so BCMGames is able to handle different versions of GPSShogi.)

Then uing the following commands after starting gpsusi.exe:
Code:
usi
isready
usinewgame
position startpos moves 9g9f 9c9d
go btime 60000 wtime 60000 byoyomi 2000
This two moves will force GPSShogi to leave the book.

On the XP-computer I've tested, I get the following output:
Code:
info depth 0
info depth 1 seldepth 0 time 16 score cp 21 nodes 8 nps 500 pv resign
info depth 2
info depth 2 seldepth 2 time 32 score cp 0 nodes 45 nps 1406 pv 2g2f 7a6b
info depth 2 seldepth 2 time 63 score cp 36 nodes 177 nps 2809 pv 7g7f 3c3d
... and then the process is terminating without giving any feedback.

Daigo Moriwaki of the GPS Shogi team taught me the following trick: from the command line, run

.\gpsshogi --health-check

Then it tests and reports if it can access all data files it needs.

But on my XP machine it reports everything is OK, and then I have exactly the same problem as you. I will report it to Daigo.
