IMO the new Ipod Touch looks interesting as a platform for chess programs.
especially since it is no mobile phone.
it has e.g. WLAN for Internet !!
looks like THE new I/O interface for doing computerchess IMO.
480 x 320 pixel
Mac OS X
299 Euro 8 GB or 399 Euro 16 GB looks also interesting for the hash of our chess programs.
has anbody an idea how fast the CPU in those devices Iphone/Ipod touch
is ??
I don't share your opinion,it won't have enough calculating power in my opinion....
Nice chick in the display though
_No one can hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you can hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward….
isn't shredder as java engine running in iphone. how many NPS is shredder doing under iphone ?
I think the iPhone has a 620 Mhz Intel processor, which is fairly fast for a handheld device. (There are a lot of conflicting opinions about this, though.)
Shredder for the iPhone doesn't report nps, PV, or any other search data. It has three difficulty levels: hard, medium, and easy. It's a nice little program for playing a quick game on the iPhone, but it doesn't seem very strong to me. It's a web based application, so you cou can see what it looks like and test it out by going to http://www.shredderchess.com/iphone/
The chess engines on my PPC hit 40k nps or even more, however I was thinking about what the old dedicated units or even old software (Colossus 4 was about 150 nps on the Spectrum if I remember correctly)could achieve with similar levels of processing power to my phone.
Given the advances in programming techniques I would have thought that you could get the iTouch to play a half decent game with little trouble, certainly it won't worry a strong player but should be OK for the average club player.
All assuming that Apple actually open up the unit to developers and don't have it closed off like the iPhone.
