At some point NNUE switched on their greedy side <snip>
Oh the irony — someone want something at a reduced price so calls the seller greedy!
Steve
lol..that's pretty funny.

I believe that due to the small difference between Komodo 12.1.1 FREE version and Komodo 14.1 in rating and due to the fact that version 2.6.1 was released long time ago and a newer version is on the way Komodo 14.1 should be lower to only $29.00 https://komodochess.com/Komodo14.htm

Funny — I was thinking of the this exact quote when I wrote the post!

This thread feels like the appropriate one to express my thoughts concerning the release policy of Komodo.
Komodo 12.1 is actuallly the latest commercial program I‘ve bought, and it doesn’t feel like a long time ago. It came at a reasonable price, but it wasn’t cheap either. It came with a new Fritz GUI that I needed at that time, and I didn’t regret it.
But what is the point of releasing such a program for free at a later point in time? You will probably piss off some customers who paid the full price – the big question: will it get you any new ones? I most seriously doubt it. I think, this is just a bad idea in general.
But these threads with „Chessqueen“ and you are the reason why Dragon 3 will probably be the next program I’ll buy in a few days. And I think there should be a big market for the feature you suggest, namely that the program will play incredibly stong unleashed ( though not quite as strong as Stockfish) , but it may also be a good and credible opponent for yourself at strength 1800-2000 e.g. and make a good sparring partner.
This I want to try. So you probably got yourself a customer by PR – and hopefully also by achievement. But I don’t want to see it as a free download in like 12 months.
Just IMHO – YMMV.

For me, it's much more important that a program makes a good sparring partner. In my case, it means that Dragon 3 Elo values are realistic in 1900-2200 range. Outside of that, who really cares if the maximum strength is 3600 or 3700? I doubt even the World Champion would see the difference.
Whatever, I will purchase it tomorrow, and play some games against it when I'm slept and rested well, so we'll see.

Komodo 13 is now something like 300 elo behind the new Dragon 3, and about 3 years old, so it's not at all competitive with or even very similar to the current product. I don't anticipate making any Dragon versions free in the foreseeable future, unless something makes NNUE obsolete. But I'll also add that we are not running KomodoChess to maximize profits; neither Mark nor I needs the income, but we do have expenses (new hardware, electricity for testing, a couple part-time employees who do need the income, prizes for events, and a share goes to chess.com for all the help (rental hardware, part-time help from their employees) that they provide. The free (and very cheap) older versions we give out are our way of contributing to the chess community for those who can't afford (or can't benefit from) the top-line versions. Maybe we would make a few more dollars by a more stingy policy, but that's not a prime concern for us. Komodo is a business, but with hobby-like attributes. I certainly wouldn't be doing this if my goal was to make as much money as I could.

Komodo developers have one bad habit - they like to eat every day.
This isn't about wanting Dragon 3 for free, this is about they making old version free until 3rd party technology was developed, and after adopting it deciding it was too good to share. Taking taking taking and not giving back.
The idea that if they make Dragon 3 free when Dragon 7 is released they'd need to spend an entire day without food because they couldn't afford it is ridiculous.
(you could ask "who else does it?" - but they used to do it, so you can compare the non-greedy Komodo team with the greedy one, and now we have to thank them because an obsolete version that should be free is cheaper...)
Your beliefs create your reality, so be careful what you wish for.
