Re: Stockfish vs Chessbase....Who Do We Root For?!?

Hi Dietrich, Why divide revenue by headcount? That's a meaningless figure given that margins vary from company to company. Instead, profits per headcount is much more meaningful. But even that figure can be manipulated and contrived, for example, due to bonuses or extraordinary events/expenses. The...

Re: Moderator Elections - Candidates and Statements (Only)

While I too dislike offensive language, bullying and the like, I think the letter of the charter covers these eventualities. The real question is how it is enforced through moderation. Even a few trolls can spoil an otherwise excellent forum. If elected, I would work in consensus with my fellow mode...

Re: Stockfish vs Chessbase....Who Do We Root For?!?

About 20 years ago we would eyeball a services company by dividing revenue by headcount. $100k per employee was average. That was 20 years ago, though. I’d guess $100k isn’t all that healthy now, but it’s not a very sophisticated calculation.

Re: Stockfish: Our lawsuit against ChessBase

Andy,

you don’t do yourself any favors by using such hyperbolic language and making personal insults. Before you go on another rant about the racist sales practices of ChessBase, let’s just let it go.

Re: Stockfish: Our lawsuit against ChessBase

Alrighty. I'll concede that my use of the word "buried" was a bit hyperbolic if you'll concede that your claim that Stockfish is "heavily mentioned" in the marketing material is simply false. There’s not that much of it. Here from the description tab: *The Fat Fritz 2 Chess Engine is based on the s...

Re: Stockfish: Our lawsuit against ChessBase

Ethereal "[learned] from the surgical precision of Stockfish's legendary search". Would that leave you to believe that Ethereal is a direct fork of Stockfish? The 24/7 apologist bit is really annoying, Dkappe, and I don't entirely understand why you bother. You don't engage in technical discussion ...

Re: Stockfish: Our lawsuit against ChessBase

Stockfish wasn't heavily mentioned in the marketing materials, that's just not true. It is mentioned one time, buried in the middle of ChessBase's marketing drivel: "... while learning from the surgical precision of Stockfish’s legendary search". This doesn't make it remotely clear to the customer ...

Re: Stockfish: Our lawsuit against ChessBase

...he didn’t care if ChessBase’s behavior was technically legal if it went against his conception of correct behavior. You can even almost ignore the "correctness" thing it just casts doubt about the decision makers most basic competence. If you rely on the work of foss developers and release a pro...

Re: Stockfish: Our lawsuit against ChessBase

But I assume the Stockfish source at GitHub to which they refer does contain such a copyright notice. The comment seem to be about giving credit during marketing. I don't hink the GPL puts any conditions on how you market the program. To paraphrase the gentleman who earlier referred to “chess commu...

Re: Stockfish: Our lawsuit against ChessBase

Is 'giving credit' a condition of the GPL? From the GPL FAQ: I want to get credit for my work. I want people to know what I wrote. Can I still get credit if I use the GPL? You can certainly get credit for the work. Part of releasing a program under the GPL is writing a copyright notice in your own ...
