Re: Why was GM Savic SO Upset, do NOT understand ?

I do not know why the GM was upset, if he was. Did he think his opponent was not making progress? But in the position Ajedrecista took the time to post, the engine’s Kh3, going after the weak f5 pawn, was easily winning for white. Maybe he was hoping black would just blunder in time pressure. It woul...

Re: Chess Board Options

I have read an excerpt from the book — it was wonderful — and have already ordered a copy of the book.
Congratulations, GM Kaufman!

Re: Great Queen Sac by GM Lasker against George Thomas?

GM Kaufman, As a child long ago, this was one of my favorite games. I enjoyed Lasker’s “Chess for Fun and Chess for Blood” too. And I remember my wonder at the marvelous endgame against another Lasker at the great NY tournament in 1924. What were your impressions of Edward Lasker, if I may ask? Than...

Re: Only use an Engine if you can NOT solve it !

Again, in the position I commented on, Qh7+ wins a rook. If Kg1, then the rook falls on d3. White can both lose the rook and blunder into mate after Rh3: ... Rd1+; Kh2 Rh1+!; Kxh1 Qxh3+ mating; or if white plays Kg3 instead of Kxh1, then ...Qh4+! Rxh4+ gxh4+ is mate. When solving a tactics problem, ...

Re: Only use an Engine if you can NOT solve it !

In the last position simply ...Qh7+ wins on the spot, because the rook on d3 falls.

Re: Will someone please refresh my memory!

It’s been a long time, but I’m pretty sure I watched this installment of the Harvard Cup in person. I don’t remember the Boris Gulko game in question, but take a look here: http://www.sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~kopec/Publications/The%204th%20Harvard%20Cup%20Human%20Versus%20Computer%20Chess%20Challenge....

Re: What is the outcome of this unusual endgame

I have not looked at this position with an engine. But I believe that at a glance, most strong players would evaluate this as winning for black. Black is up two pawns, and all four pawns are connected. It seems obviously winning.

Re: Komodo vs GM Smerdon knight odds match

This will be exciting to watch! I'm going to stick with my prediction that Komodo will win comfortably. I apologize if these questions have already been answered, but 1. Which version of Komodo will be playing? Will GM Smerdon be told which version he's playing against? 2. What will Komodo's contemp...

At these time controls, I expect Komodo to win the match comfortably.
