Re: Fluctuations in Stockfish evaluation

Fluctuations. Not because of any property of chess. Not because of alga beta algorithm. And we can assume there is nothing wrong or unstable with “Stockfish programming” whatever that means. With no pruning and no extensions there would be full repeatability, no “fluctuations”. They’re a property o...

Re: Fluctuations in Stockfish evaluation

Of course I have used 1 thread to avoid non-determination due multiple threads. If the single-threaded AVX2 and BMI2 versions indeed produce different results (on exactly the same settings and starting from an empty hash table etc.), then there might be a bug. (Unless the discrepancy is known and a...

Re: Fluctuations in Stockfish evaluation

Contempt is mostly non-functional with nnue. It only works in positions where classical is used, so its effect is very marginal. Also, SF13 is already outdated. https://abrok.eu/stockfish/ I have repeated the experiment with latest dev version, see above and below. You are right, with contemp 0 res...

Re: Fluctuations in Stockfish evaluation

I wonder what is the origin of these unpleasant fluctuations and if there is a solution. What would be the point of searching longer/deeper if fluctuations did not exist? If you don't want fluctuations, search to depth 1. On the other hand, I don't understand the discrepancy between the results of ...

I wonder if setting contempt to zero would help? I only ever use zero.
Thank you for the advice. I will repeat the experiment with contemp equal to zero.

Re: Fluctuations in Stockfish evaluation

I have repeated the experiment with the latest dev versions obtaining similar results. version Stockfish_21061411_x64_modern with 1 Gb RAM in a i7 7700HQ after 30 minutes variations from +0.16 to +0.45 and alternating best moves between d4, c4 and e4, final best move d4 and version Stockfish_2106141...

Fluctuations in Stockfish evaluation

Stockfish's progress is impressive, especially after nnue. However, the fluctuations in the evaluation are still there. For example at initial position with one thread, discarding the first two minutes, we have with version Stockfish_13_win_x64_bmi2 with 1 Gb RAM in a i7 7700HQ after 30 minutes vari...

Re: First Gambit Rating List

What processor and number of threads are using the engines? You can use the Banksia GUI with the new feature of independent concurrency for GPU and play it faster. See http://talkchess.com/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=72350&start=1210 Unfortunately Cutechess doesn't support it. For example in a 16 thr...

Re: Version 0.41 beta released

I am using Banksia GUI lately and it is very good for doing tournaments with different time control for each player. The concurrency is another excellent feature of Banksia if you want to play several games simultaneously using a few cores per engine. The problem of the concurrency is that you can'...

Re: Version 0.41 beta released

Many thanks for implement this new feature of concurrency for GPU and CPU in Banksia GUI. It is a very useful feature for testing GPU vs CPU. Best regards New special functions for GPU engines, a user: 1) can mark engines as GPUs 2) can set up serially CPU cores for GPU engines which may be differen...
