Re: We are past the stage where the OS has become the virus

I keep my two fastest machines offline. Main issue wrt computer chess is when you want to run a commercial engine that enforces internet activation. IIRC some will let you manually transfer a license key to a second machine if you register the engine on your connected PC first. Possibly not Chessbas...

Re: King safety evaluation

What happens in the games it loses? Maybe post some samples. have you tried halving the new ksaf factor as an experiment? It may just be too strong. Mine goes like this: sum attackers and attacked squares adjacent to king sum friendly pieces on adjacent squares ksaf -= attackers * attackedsquares ks...

Re: It walks like a clone, it quacks like a clone ...

I think you missed his point. Top engine devs are not lurking around in the talkchess subforums anymore. They are in discord servers. Whether that be Stockfish, Leela, or smaller ones like their own Koivisto one or OpenBench's discord. I think that's a pity. Discord is a chat program and the signal...

Re: The mailbox trials

I'm just not having any piecelists. I can see that it would make sense to know the kings positions without having to go over the entire board, but why is it good to know where the other pieces are? Did you use that in your evaluation function or something? Even in a bitboard-engine, piecelists can ...

Re: Testing strategies for my engines playing strength

I have replaced my piece counting evaluation with the tuned PSTs from Sunfish because I was curious and it made the engine play much stronger. But it's a bit like using neural networks - sure they work but you won't have an intuition why. I'll stick with counting pieces for now, that I understand j...

Re: Cutechess-cli illegal PV move

cutechess seems to use qWarning for that and the Qt docu for qWarning says "If no message handler has been installed, the message is printed to stderr." So you can try cutechess-cli ... 2>nul (in Windows) to avoid output of stderr. But you may also lose some more output of cutechess. And even bette...
