This thread is some real INTERESTING nonsense. Last post here, then I'm out of here because this is wildly inappropriate.
1. It is common for authors to send a pre-release to rating lists. This way a 3rd party can get elo estimates, and as a quick check against bugs that might not appear on my testing machines.
2. I did exactly that. I have sent a copy to CCRL, CEGT, SPCC, Ipman, and FastGM. CCC has a copy naturally since they are always grabbing the latest, and TCEC will get one as soon as they have an event that will require Ethereal. No one else has a copy.
3. That being said, I could give a copy to whomever I want. It is my program, my networks, my codebase. I don't owe anyone anything in regards to Ethereal. I happen to believe in providing updates to anyone who bought 13.00, and I intend to give 13.50 and 13.75 to anyone who owns a copy currently. I don't have to do that, I don't have a "subscription" thing like Komodo or Houdini did. And in fact, come 14.00, I do not know what I plan to do. I am putting in an inordinate amount of time for historically low gains, due to how strong engines are now, and the fact that NNUE has basically removed the 100+ elo gap that Ethereal held over the rest of the non SF/K/Leela field.
4. If you have a problem with any of that, then argue with me in my email. This forum is not the place, when you have a direct line to me via Discord and email. You will get your copy at the same time as every other non-rating list. Which will be very soon. I am giving lists a couple more days. Mainly, I am hoping to have CCRL's FRC results published, because they will be the best selling point for the Engine.

Re: Ethereal - question
Sorry, but I don't hold any grudges against you, after all, you bought the program. The whole problem is with the author of the engine who gives the engine to some and not to others. It disrespects other people who have bought the program. The rule should be - I give to everyone or no one. It doesn't matter here CCRL, CEGT, SPCC, Ipman, FastGM.sarona wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 2:02 amI have never had a problem dealing with Andrew regarding Ethereal. In fact, he was very forthcoming and helpful when I had questions about his GitHub sources.Krzysztof Grzelak wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 6:21 pm A huge and cordial request to the author of the program. Please also respect other people who bought your program. And not only selected people with whom you share the program.
I think I was the first person to buy Ethereal via PayPal. His instructions were clear and he always replied promptly and with respect. Cannot ask for more than that.
And I certainly would not consider myself one of his "selected people."

Re: Ethereal - question
Krzysztof,
for a commercial product ...
___All___ people, have interest on it, should have the chance / possiblity to test it to the same time.
This one around Ethereal here is in my opinion not respectable.
Nothing to do with:
I give it different persons for free (if I am speaking for myself, I pay for a commercial software and will nothing have for free since I start with computer chess). But, this is the decision by the owner of the software and gentlemen like if Andrew thinking on persons working on rating systems.
I hope other commercial programmers will not follow such a _new_ way ... if the version of the program isn't a dev version.
For me is Ethereal 13.50 K.O. ... self mate.
But maybe a newer commercial version can be interesting if again ...
___All___ people, have interest on it, can test it to the same time.
But I can understand your opinion!!
If you like to work with "the chosen one" where did it start and end?
I will give it to rating people for free ...
I will give it to other programmers for free ...
I will give it to organization for free ...
...
The group of people where have to pay for it will be smaller and smaller.
What I never understand from companys like ChessBase in the past.
Produced "fan boys".
The programmer of Revenge have here a very clear opinion and wrote this in TalkChess.
And his opinion is clear and in my opinion absolutely right.
But again, this one is the decision by the owner of a software and positive is ... the good will if a commercial programmer thinking on persons do a great job for the community.
Best

Re: Ethereal - question
As for the Revenge program - I like and respect this man a lot (because he is a concrete person). As for the Ethereal program - it's true that the author can do whatever he wants with the program. But he should not forget about all the people who bought the program.Frank Quisinsky wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 9:01 am Hi Krzysztof,

Re: Ethereal - question
Hi Krzysztof,
absolutely!
Very professional what the programmer do!
But this was only one example:
Let us not discuss in Ethereal thread about it.

Frank
Andrew is a very talented programmer, most I know like him a lot because he do so many good things for the community!!
But this one what he do here was bad and if I am speaking for myself.
NoGo for private available, a short time or not ... not important for me.
I wish him good luck with Ethereal 13.50 and hope he have success.
