Or more likely, by a company who is losing a lot of money due to piracy.

Surely they can afford to hire an "ethical hacker" to solve such a problem for them.

Perhaps the same one who was hired to solve the same "problem" at immortal chess forum?

The only commercial product being "pirated" (does the term apply to chess games?) is the Mega Database.

In general, I wouldn't characterize that forum as a source of copyright infringement; although the private Eman engine is publicly posted on a regular basis, no money is being lost, because it's a free and private endeavour.

That said, both these recurrent themes are in contradiction with forum rules 8 and 9.
8 - Posting download links to or asking for illegal or commercial material is not allowed.
9 - Posting download links to private material without the owner's permission is not allowed.

Really? Perhaps you missed the section where commercial video courses, eBooks (or real book scans) and so on.

It seems only commercial engines are protected.

Other forms of copyrighted material are seemingly fair game.

And ANY of those companies might have motivation to take them down.

True, I forgot about those. I wonder what's their definition of "commercial material".

Where exactly you saw "Thanks" system etc? If you have any problems / disagreement then write about it on the forum right away.
No need to slander.
