We are reaching the Max Odds that a top engine can give the top 3 GM's

Post by Chessqueen »

Very soon either Stockfish or Komodo will be able to give a Knight odds in TC of 2'+1" to the top 3 GM.s, but we are really witnessing the maximum odds that any engine would be able to give to the 3 top GMs, since none of us will be able to see an engine giving a Rook Odds with a TC of 2'+1"
Do NOT worry and be happy, we all live a short life

The real challenge here is for an engine to give knight odds in Rapid (15' + 10") to GMs, at least with Armageddon rule that White (the odds-giver) wins draws. I think this is already possible with low-rated GMs (low 2400s). So the goal can be to gradually increase the rating of the GM to whom an engine can win say a five game Armageddon knight odds match. People expect blunders in blitz, but 15' + 10" is now the most popular time control for Elite events, especially online, so this is supposed to be a serious time limit where strong players should not make too many simple blunders. Whether an engine will ever be able to beat the world's best Rapid player this way is unknown, we are far from that point now.

I think that 15'+10'' is clearly possible against chess engines that are GM strength.

I do not know if it is possible to use cutechess for fischer time control but here is a game at 13 minutes/40 moves when Rubichess 3 cpu beat old Movei
(I think that it is equivalent to CCRL long time control).

I would like to know what is the rating of engines from this position and if there are engines that are stronger than rubichess2.1 in these conditions
against chess engines based on testing.

I'll run some tests on my 5 GHz i9 laptop with Komodo Dragon 2, Contempt 100, giving knight odds in Rapid (15' +10") (close to CCRL rapid tc) to various engines on that list, with both using just one thread. I'm using the middle 1000 positions from Chris W. knight odds opening book for variety. First opponent is Fruit 2.2.1, rated 2743 on the CCRL rapid list. But even if Dragon wins the match, this does not imply that it could give knight odds successfully in Rapid to a 2743 FIDE rated human, even though I'm sure that Fruit 2.2.1 would crush such a human (Peter Svidler, Le Quang Liem, and Wesley So are all rated about that figure on the FIDE Rapid list) in a Rapid match of normal chess. The human knows to avoid complications when winning, while the programs generally don't fully understand this (NNs "understand" it better than classical engines). So this doesn't really tell us much about the proper human level for knight odds, except perhaps to put an upper limit on it.

Dragon 2 giving knight odds in Rapid lost to Fruit 2.2.1 by 79 elo (+12 -21 =7), so with Armageddon scoring it would have been nearly a tie. I'll run Dragon 2 against Benjamin 1.0 (2698 CCRL Rapid) overnight. I recall that Benjamin was rather strong for its rating when taking knight odds against other top engines in the past, so Benjamin may do as well as Fruit, we'll see. Note that this is standard mode; MCTS mode does worse giving knight odds to engines, but better (it seems) against humans.

I played only a single game of RubiChess without a knight against Fruit2.2.1 but RubiChess won

I wonder if Dragon is better than RubiChess against engines with knight odd conditions.

Very interesting, but it is only one game, I wonder how many games it will win if it plays the same amount of games that Komodo played ?
Do NOT worry and be happy, we all live a short life

Very interesting, but it is only one game, I wonder how many games it will win if it plays the same amount of games that Komodo played ?
Dragon 2 lost badly giving knight odds to Benjamin 1.0 (2698 CCRL Rapid), +27 -92 =5 (-202 elo) in Rapid (15' + 10"). I've noted before here that this Ed Shroder program is unusually good at playing receiving knight odds, so I shouldn't be surprised. It is really much closer to a human substitute than other engines of the same rating. Good work, Ed! Against Arasan 14.1 (2651 CCRL Rapid), Dragon 2 is currently leading by 31 to 22 with 7 draws at knight odds, match continuing. So overall it seems to perform around 2680 or so against engines other than Benjamin at knight odds, but only around 2500 against Benjamin.
Regarding RubiChess, I'm not familiar with it, but is there any particular reason to expect it to perform better giving knight odds than other higher rated engines? Were threads set to 1 for both engines in the above game (I think Fruit 2.2.1 is only single thread)?
Komodo rules!

I wonder if Dragon is better than RubiChess against engines with knight odd conditions.

I am also testing Rubichess-2.1 vs fruit 2.2.1 and the first 2 games Fruit won first with the g1 Knight removed and the 2nd game with the b1 Knight removed. intel i7 7440 3.40 GHz. I have both playing with 1 CPU out of my 8 available cores. TC 15 minutes plus 10 seconds delay

Here is the first game and the 2nd with b1 Knight removed is almost over
