Post by Eduard »

On PlayChess with only one core:

Hardware: Lenovo Notebook Ideapad 5 with Ryzen 5700U (16 Threads), 16 GB RAM
OS: Windows 11 (All Engines now 7% slower than before with Windows 10)

GUI Fritz 16
Hash 512 MB
Book: My newest CTG universal opening book
Syzygy all 3456men GUI & Engine

Engine ShashChess 20
Settings: MCTS=Single, Learning OFF, Move Overhead=450

Cores=1 (2 threads):

Engine has to play a lot of difficult openings, like C65 with black and white, and closed English variants. The engine also had to play Caro-Kann, French and Kings Indian. And all against opponents with up to 64 cores!! With a core against 64! It's incredible how well ShashChess plays.

Unbeaten in 100 games in a row, 1 won game!

All games in PGN (with evals and hardware info of the opponent):

More than 1 Notebook-Core is not needed!!

Hahaha, very funny. I am testing an Engine on playchess with my 11 Year old Laptop (2.5x slower than only 1 Ryzen 5700U laptop core). ONLY 900 kns (no joke), after 145 games:

These results suggest that where there is a strong opening book on these platforms, engine power matters little. Although 64cores/128 thread system is about 200 elo stronger than the 1 core system, the games ended in a draw.
How about using anti opening books on powerful systems like a3/b3/g3/h3 in the first two moves with white pieces?

I played with a special book that I have optimized for draw. Complicated variants are not played. Also variants with many blockered pawns are not played. For slow hardware, variants are good, where you can quickly open the lines, and many figures can swapp. Nevertheless, my slow engine also played Sicilian. Here is Najdorf best. It's hard to find anti-variant. Playing the fast hardware fast h3, b3, a3, etc. at the beginning, I immediately occupy the center, using d5, c5, and e5. Black has then very good game. Important for slow hardware is that after moves such as b3 or g3, the center is instantly occupied. Gimmicks with b6 or g6 should avoid black. Good game against slow hardware is, for example Catalan. In any case, you have to always handle aggressive with slow hardware.
