Stockfish 16.10. plays great, but

Post by Jouni »

it has lost SF15 ability to solve fast some famous positions e.g.

You cannot apply razoring to any depth with only an eval condition to limit it and then expect that to be a "nearly non-functional change".
https://github.com/official-stockfish/S ... cefc3ef1fa
Ask any of the senior programmers in this forum what then happens :) I am just joking about the certainty but likelihood > 60 % that is what causes this. I suspected this would happen when I saw that patch yesterday :) And if you go back to the commit just before that, unfortunately I still have no working compiler to make the change in the source myself, sorry but the Dev build from Abrok.eu will have to do:

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Engine is buggy!

I don't know about buggy, when it is just one testposition, but the razoring patch was not the cause of this, sorry. It must be something earlier. This one, 24 July Dev Stockfish still solves it but I only have three Stockfish versions on my computer so I can not narrow it down any further.
(Nolot position #?: Yuri S. Gusev vs E. Auerbach (1946) 24.Qxe5!)

Simplify EVASIONS scoring

remove some multipliers & adjust, doesn't change the move ordering

I did not test the Brad Knox and Torsten Hellwig changes as that seemed nonfunctional changes after the mstembera patch, which by itself also did not change the bench from the mstembera patch before it, but the peregrine shahin is the first functional change that does not solve the (difficult) Nolot.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Here is another test position that stockfish15 with 7 cores could solve after some minutes and I wait to see if stockfish can see a mate score when
I guess latest version is going to fail

Post by Uri Blass »

Stockfish15 did not see a mate score at depth 61 and could only see advantage of 58.14 pawns
This is a study by Y.Hoch and H.Aloni that was outside of the scope of engines in the past.
