When I can write a better program than the lastest Deep Sjeng, then Imight complain about it being not worth the price. I think it's a very nice program. It's more fun when on occasion these programs knock off the mighty Rybka!
But NET.Framework
Only UCI, registration e.g. Hiarcs. What GUI Sjeng? cca 25MB install pack, unpack (install) files in Sjeng directory cca 5MB (with 1MB book and GUI)

I hate Christophe's post, sarcastic mode is too confusing.

BTW It's exactly 1 month from release of demo version. I have feeling
that Deep Sjeng25.exe will work forever. So no need to buy :?

Christophe,

A little unfair - all you need to do is release a 64-bit version an mp version and suddently the number of versions tested multiplies.

At 40/4 we did have 3 versions of Chess Tiger 2007 for a while Arena, native and CB until we were confident that there were no interface issues hurting performance - perhaps I should have kept them seperate

Seriously though I am a Chess Tiger fan and have been from the beginning - give us a new version or setting you would like tested and I will test it.

All the best

Surely all new releses should be tested with default settings before the testing of any betas. If an engine is MP then yes this does present problems but should probably be tested on 1 2 and 4 cpus and if it plays frc on rays very good list.

Only after this has been done should testing parameters or betas be considered!?

Just my thougts!

Harvey

ps the css list used to provide a great idea quickly of how a new engine was doing - I wish someone would re-vamp the list.

http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/404FRC/

<sarcastic mode>

Why do you restrict this to Sjeng or Glaurung?

The strongest free engine is Rybka 1.0 beta. By your reasoning everything that is rated lower is not worth buying.

So there are only 2 programs that are worth buying: Rybka 2.3 and Hiarcs 11.1.

Once you have purchased Rybka, WTF are you going to waste some more money with a program that is rated much lower like Hiarcs?

So it turns out that there is only one chess program in the world that is worth buying, and at this time it is: (tadaaa!...) Rybka 2.3.

All the other chess programs should be free and their authors are trying to rip you off by asking money for them.

Actually, the authors who offer free programs that are rated lower than Rybka 1.0 are also ripping you off because they are basically stealing your precious time with their crappy creations. And some are unable to play FRC (who cares about chess anymore, FRC is the only game that is interesting enough, chess is too simple).

I was only quoting programs that are capable of playing FRC or Chess960, Rybka cannot play FRC, there are a few free programs that are capable of playing FRC and are much stronger than Deep Sjeng, and at the moment five commercial programs that are much stronger and are FRC capable (Hiarcs, Shredder, Loop, Fruit 2.2.1, and Naum).

Sadly that was a bit of wishful thinking Jouni, now that 30 days are really over, the engine no longer functions, just past the midnight hour, I got the Shredder GUI message: "This is not an UCI-engine" :( :( :( Maybe Gian-Carlo will make an update available as a trial :P :P :P. He should take a look at the Multi- variation mode as in Deep Sjeng version 2.5 I suspect it is broken. I don't know if he reads the forum a lot, but this was some strange output in a recent testposition from Jon Dart after 1.Ne5.

OK so programs that just play chess and chess only aren't worth buying either...

I never mentioned that, but it seems that is better if you get two variations in the same package. If program A is 55 rating points stronger than program B, but it only offer standard chess and both are commercials, I would NOT think twice to buy program B, which offer standard chess and FRC

PS: I am NOT trying to give you a hint, but once I get bored watching a standard chess program, or playing against it, then I can switch to FRC, either to get more bored or to watch or play a different variation
