I have tested Yuriy's book and have found very good and very bad
lines. For example: after 1)e4 black plays only 1)..c6. If he feels so
strongly with Caro-Kann then he should show super lines for black and
not out of book sometimes with a disadvantage of -0.60 or more!.
With the continue this lines can be seen that the engine has difficulties to
salvage the game.
Hello Theodor,

A difficulty with some books is maybe that they are tuned for specific opponents but in that case they can be less balanced, and you would see strange things if you play the book against itself. But that can also be fun; sometimes a bad move with a refutation in book if you have the wrong settings for the book can remain as one of the few or even the only move to be played, it happened with Harry's book in the Shredder edition on my computer, there were a few lines that should have gotten an "e" or "f" or "g" especially when the refutation is a forced line for both sides because the engines play a match with the same book! That can lead to some interesting games! But to be fair I had also changed the settings of Harry's book to require that a move should have at least two games to be chosen and changed some of the weights. Playing the book against itself is maybe a good way of finding bad lines, and a good way to improve the book.

But about Yuri's book I do not understand, I see the Sicilian is represented with over 50,000 games in the book and many other answers to 1. e4. Maybe you saw an older version of my book.ctg?

Can someone explain how to make a quality opening book as I would like to try make my own for the ChessBase interface? The problem with the Arena GUI is that the books are not as good as the ChessBase ones.

Hi,

You will find a very good easy to follow explanation of book making on Kevin Frayer's excellent site. The relevant sections are:

http://kevinfrayer.blogspot.com/2008_02_03_archive.html

http://kevinfrayer.blogspot.com/2008_02_10_archive.html

and then on to how to hand tune the book once you have created it:

Also there is good advice here:

Hope this helps you,

Harry's latest books are fine.

HS-classic 8moves II.abk
HS-classic 10moves 2.0.abk
HS-12moves.abk

There was some good advice in the bookmaking link though the computer chess expert who said to start with a blank book and a blank DB might be pulling my leg. That will mean lines like 1 Nc3 are calculated by the engine and go into the book.

Does anybody know what happened to Sheebar.ctg? The version on Superchessengine is a number of years old and there are no updates.
