I dont think there is a way to convert ICC ratings in to actual ratings. ICC rating of Romi is currently inflated as I tend to play games against engines and people that I think Romi can win against.. Look at my history, I have played almost 50 games against Strongbach to boost up the bullet rating.. I do not know many engines that actually plays bullet on ICC and also due to Romi's time management issues Romi even fumbles against strongbach occasionally. I have heard that Mike fixed the ponder related time management issues, but I havent talked to him in a while since my computer is in no shape to do serious testing.

There are two thoughts on converting one rating system to another.
1) Purely Mathematical
2) Factor in Psychological Issues/Human Behavior

From a purely mathematical perspective, yes you can under certain
conditions. The conditions are simple and exist on ICC. You need a
sufficient number for rated ICC players that are FIDE or USCF rated
depending on which other system you are trying to predict. You simply
gather the data from both rating systems for intersecting member sets
and use correlation coefficients to see if there exists a correlation. If
one does exist, then an equation can be created to predict data points
in one system using data points from the other.

Now, the human behavior issue. I've noticed several IM's and GM's with
lower ICC ratings than their FIDE or USCF rating (talking about standard
TC ratings). Yet, I've noticed nonmasters with the opposite rating
relationships. Why is this the case? I have a guess based on the games
played between Telepath and the various IM's and GM's. To them, ICC
is a playground - this is a place for them to test out new ideas and
it doesn't hurt them to lose because it doesn't affect their FIDE or USCF
ratings. Several of them play Telepath when it is online and I think they
like to play against comps because they need an opponent that is
guaranteed to be playing seriously to test out their ideas/novelties.

So, can it be done? Yes, the mathematics exists and the data exists.
Will the prediction equation be reliable? It seems not at ratings above
2300, but it might be reliable between 1000 and 2200.

i do remember you asking me to compete in one of your first Tournaments with a dedicated but i dont remember the details

Yes, we had a thread about a year before that discussing my
Fidelity Excellence 4 MHz and CXG Super Crown which I purchased
in the late 1980's and still have them. During that period several
friends from the local chess club bought these machines. We'd
play each others machines ourselves and play them against each
other. Sort of a community collection. I'd have bought several more
if I weren't in the CS field and knew I could create my own. Funny,
I was in a human chess tournament last January and the vendor
had a Mephisto Master and it took a lot of effort not to buy it.

Thorsten and Steve,

Looks like I could match up with both of you. One match against
Thorsten's Sparc and another against Steve's (haven't decided yet
- could be the Mephisto London 68030 33 MHz).

I am open on the specifics, but here is what I was thinking.
Match takes place at about 1 min per move - I'd go for 2 min
per move as well. Moves posted in this forum and may be posted
in other forums. I'd like to get in at least 2 games per opponent.
So, I could possibly play Thorsten in the AM (eastern USA) due to
his Time Zone and Steve in the PM (eastern USA) due to his TZ.

At 1 min per move per side, a game is likely to go 2 hours + more
due to the comm via the forum. We can use email as well since the
comps will make several moves in less than one min. (opening,
ponder hits, easy moves....).

So, I could match 2 games with Thorsten's machines at 8am NY USA
time and should be complete between 1pm and 2pm NY USA time.
Then, follow that with a 2 game match against Steve's machine which
would likely finish around 8 pm NY USA time. Or, I could match each
of you on a different day.

I am ok if the TC is such that only 1 game per day is completed.
I could match each of you and a weekend but seperate weekends.
I'd just like a game to finish on the day it starts.

We could use a server and then somebody keeps the forums posted.

What do you gentlemen think?

1 minute per move is fine with me
actually i am bit of an early bird myself so i can play at 6am or even 5 am in the morning if you can manage to be up at that hour
we are both on the east coast so we could get both games in one sitting
i am only a member of Playchess so we could play there
this weekend is OK for me (either Saturday or Sunday)
next weekend is not good for me
the weekend after that is also OK

at this fast a time control i dont see how we can post the moves here in real time?
would be hard for me to do that and also operate the computer..all in 1 minutes time?

We don't have to use Playchess or ICC. We can just do it here.
I don't have a playchess account anymore. Suppose I could
create a guest accout? I think this Sunday would work for me.
If we start early in the AM, we could go for 2 min per move and
have one game each day?
