I think you were using http:// instead of ftp://. At least the link you posted was.
No, I didn't post a link at all -- it seems that the forum software just decided to interpret "ftp dot cis dot uab dot edu" as a URL; I have no idea why.
Until this moment, I didn't even know it was possible to use a web browser as an FTP client. I've always been using ncftp, and think I will keep doing so. It's so much more comfortable.

I use FireFTP, an addon for the Firefox web browser. For a GUI style client it does the job well and with minimal fuss.
