Back on topic, ClamAV is very good, but it isn't an automated protection system, so it will fail for many people. You must manually scan they stuff you download and set up scheduled scans. If it finds something and you are already infested, you frequently have to download a separate removal tool.
I guess that it would be fine for many of the posters here because there are a lot of techno-geeks who will have no problems setting up timers with the "at" command, etc.
