I see this topic as being in the same category as OS discussions and discussions of hardware specs. To run chess programs at optimal speed you do need to keep junk off your computer.

Back on topic, ClamAV is very good, but it isn't an automated protection system, so it will fail for many people. You must manually scan they stuff you download and set up scheduled scans. If it finds something and you are already infested, you frequently have to download a separate removal tool.
It's not for everyone but it's free. I use ClamAV at home (my son has a commercial virus protection program at home).

I guess that it would be fine for many of the posters here because there are a lot of techno-geeks who will have no problems setting up timers with the "at" command, etc.
