It's a pity that the newest versions of Fruit aren't open source anymore depsite being still free.

Romichess, Crafty, Glaurung, Strelka, Toga, Stockfish are all open source and free. And they are strong. All that is touched by Tord Romstad becomes a monster anyway.
What a group to be included in. Thanks Oliver!

Just for that, I too am going to get an OliThink tattoo! :D
Bison, Delfi and Scorpio are also very strong and open source.
What about Gandalf, Yace and Gullydeckel? ;)

Of those, only Gullydeckel is open source, but it clearly gets the prize for the best name. Especially since Boris once tricked me into believing that it was his brother's name.

LOL. You should have asked me about that;)

Gandalf 4.32 was the strongest machine at that time, must have been 2001...
I will try it with OliThink 5.2.x and I am quite positive about that.

Anyway I found this line fascinating:

"This immortal sacrifice is seen by Gandalf 5.0 without the need of deep calculation in just 2 seconds."

Edit: A pity, can't find any Gandalf 4 download...

So I took an replacement, Yace 0.23, an engine that was unbeatable for OliThink in 2002... but times are changing.

There used to be a free download of all the old Gandalf engines for Gandalf 6 users called GandalfRetroSetup.exe or something along those lines that contained all of the older Gandalf versions.

given these 4 positions from that page:

Code: Select all

3rr1k1/1b1q1p1p/p2b1npB/2pP4/1p2n3/4N1P1/PPQ1NPBP/R2R2K1 b - - bm Nxf2;

2rr2k1/1b3ppp/pb2p3/1p2P3/1P2BPnq/P1N3P1/1B2Q2P/R4R1K b - - bm Rxc3;
Here is Gandalf output on modern hardware (but the Gandalf binaries are single threaded 32 bit, so it probably does not matter much):

It's a pity that the newest versions of Fruit aren't open source anymore depsite being still free.

Romichess, Crafty, Glaurung, Strelka, Toga, Stockfish are all open source and free. And they are strong. All that is touched by Tord Romstad becomes a monster anyway.
What a group to be included in. Thanks Oliver!

Just for that, I too am going to get an OliThink tattoo! :D
Bison, Delfi and Scorpio are also very strong and open source.
What about Gandalf, Yace and Gullydeckel? ;)

http://www.chessica.de/winboard.html
Of those, only Gullydeckel is open source, but it clearly gets the prize for the best name. Especially since Boris once tricked me into believing that it was his brother's name.
;-)

You know ... I wonder if that game was really winning after Nxf2! White did not play optimal moves and could have resisted much more.

After Nxf2!

White recaptured with bishop which is not best as it puts the Knight back in with tempo. I think if white had captured with King and given back material things would have been quite different. I end up with this after some quick analysis with Rybka 3. It is still game on after this although black has an advantage.

Hey! This is blasphemy. You are doubting an IMMORTAL Sacrifice!

Anyway you are correct, after 25...Rxe3 26.Kxe3! yields to a quite drawn position, OliThink never doubts playing Kxe3 at any depth.
30. Bf4 ??? is the next big blunder by white instead of 30. Bc1.

Re: Rybka vs Deep Blue

To explore this question, the logs of the match from 1997 may be useful:

http://researchweb.watson.ibm.com/deepb ... tml/c.html

(the "cleaned" versions are easier to read)

There we find calculation depths which are very small compared to what we see from today's PCs at tournament time, IIRC 12 or 13 plies being typical. In 2010, that is blitz. On the other hand, I think Bob Hyatt explained once that D.B. made huge extensions. - Also, I can guess that the search tree of that system with 256 parallel chess cpus is very differerent even from todays mp engines on quads or octos, but I don't know what that means for playing strength, in principle.

Also, from all the discussion about it it seems that these six games only, unfortunately do not provide good test positions for comparisons.

The question about Rybka vs. Deep Blue of 1997 was also part of the recent video interview with Vas Rajlich, and he thinks that "that probably Rybka 1 could beat that version of Deep Blue."

It's an interesting position. I'm not quite sure that the immortal has died yet.

Here is a precursory examination of the position on multi-pv:

I will do a much deeper analysis later with several engines.
Positions like this are why I really love chess.

Re: Rybka vs Deep Blue

Post by M ANSARI »

Deep Blue plays like crap compared to today's chess engine's ... I mean really really bad. Let us take the first game played between Kasparov and Deep Blue, where Kasparov won.

[Event "IBM Kasparov vs. Deep Blue Rematch"]
[Site "New York, NY USA"]
[Date "1997.05.03"]
[Round "1"]
[White "Kasparov, Garry"]
[Black "Deep Blue"]
[Opening "Reti: King's Indian attack, Keres variation"]
[ECO "A07"]
[Result "1-0"]

1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 Bg4 3.b3 Nd7 4.Bb2 e6 5.Bg2 Ngf6 6.O-O c6 7.d3 Bd6
8.Nbd2 O-O 9.h3 Bh5 10.e3 h6 11.Qe1 Qa5 12.a3 Bc7 13.Nh4 g5
14.Nhf3 e5 15.e4 Rfe8 16.Nh2 Qb6 17.Qc1 a5 18.Re1 Bd6 19.Ndf1 dxe4
20.dxe4 Bc5 21.Ne3 Rad8 22.Nhf1 g4 23.hxg4 Nxg4 24.f3 Nxe3
25.Nxe3 Be7 26.Kh1 Bg5 27.Re2 a4 28.b4 f5 29.exf5 e4 30.f4 Bxe2
31.fxg5 Ne5 32.g6 Bf3 33.Bc3 Qb5 34.Qf1 Qxf1+ 35.Rxf1 h5 36.Kg1 Kf8
37.Bh3 b5 38.Kf2 Kg7 39.g4 Kh6 40.Rg1 hxg4 41.Bxg4 Bxg4
42.Nxg4+ Nxg4+ 43.Rxg4 Rd5 44.f6 Rd1 45.g7 1-0

In the initial stages Kasparov simply tries to get DB out of book, and it turns out to be a good idea. I am quite sure this play would turn out to backfire badly against something like Rybka 3. I don't have Rybka 1.0 but will use R3 as analysis.

[d]r4rk1/ppbn1pp1/2p1pn1p/q2p3b/8/PP1PPNPP/1BPN1PB1/R3QRK1 w - - 0 13

In this position DB has just played what is simply a horrible move ... Bc7? This totally blocks the black queen escape route and will block out the black queen for several tempi. I put Rybka 3 on MV mode and Bc7 turns out to be Rybka's 14 th best move ... obviously Rybka is better here.

[d]3rr1k1/1p1n1p2/1qp2n1p/p1b1p1pb/4P3/PP2N1PP/1BP2PB1/R1Q1RNK1 b - - 0 22

Here Kasparov has played inferior chess but he is more interested in trying to take advantage of chess engine's weaknesses rather than playing optimal moves. DB plays the incredible g4? Rybka is known to have a weakness for King safety ... but even it realizes this is bad. This move does not even register with Rybka when MV is set at 10 moves.

[d]3rr1k1/1p1n1p2/1qp4p/4p1bb/pP2P3/P3NPP1/1BP1R1B1/R1Q4K b - - 0 28

Here DB plays f5? which barely makes it as the 10th worst move for the position at MV mode. The position this leads to is this

[d]3rr1k1/1p6/1qp3Pp/4nP2/pP2p3/P3N1P1/1BP1b1B1/R1Q4K b - - 0 32

DB goes for an exchange that gives white the compensation of a pawn AND an unstoppable pawn chain.

[d]3rrk2/8/2p3P1/1p2nP1p/pP2p3/P1B1NbPB/2P2K2/5R2 b - - 0 38

Here DB plays Kg7? and pins himself making his most useful piece (Knight) basically useless. While other moves are bad this has to be much worse.

In game 2 we had this famous position

[d]Rr6/5kp1/1qQb1p1p/1p1PpP2/1Pp1B3/2P4P/6P1/5K2 w - - 0 45

Now DB played a real howler by today's standards ... DB played Ra6? and Kasparov famously resigned in a dead drawn position. Here is Rybka 3 analysis after Ra6? with only 30 seconds thought

Deep Blue - Kasparov,G, IBM Kasparov vs. Deep Blue Rematch 1997
1r6/5kp1/RqQb1p1p/1p1PpP2/1Pp1B3/2P4P/6P1/5K2 b - - 0 1

It takes about 2 seconds to see that this is a horrible move.

I think basically you get the idea. I have absolutely no doubt that DB would get totally crushed by Rybka on simple hardware. Of course in a tactical position DB might be able to get some nice wins every blue moon due to very deep tactics, but most likely it would simply get outplayed positionally and lose. I am also sure that Kasparov would have easily beaten DB had he played normal strong chess. DB's play was terrible and Kasparov's even worse.
