Seeing Tord's append below I am checking with Don to see if he can be online for CCT12. I'm not sure why I didn't notice this new rule of the programmer needing to be online, does that mean that Sjeng cannot play? I guess GCP could login to FICS from the slopes ... ?

The rule 2 says it must be either the author, a team member, or an operator, with some additional rules for an operator, but not the other 2 classes.

Suj owns the hardware and has done all cluster testing (and parameter tuning) for me. Erdo does the book. So I think they qualify as team members. Both should be online during the tournament.

Peter, if that is not enough, or you disagree with this interpretation then please withdraw us (rather than sending me a bill afterward).

Same goes for us. Rob, our operator, owns the hardware and is a member of the team. I will try to be online some of the time but I have to work that weekend. Mark will also be busy for most of the tournament.

Its a shame rybka avoids playing in cct this year. played in all of them up to this one too (since it was around).

Actualy it's rather a breath of fresh air not to see Rybka this year....

If I remember correctly, during the initial discussion of setting up CCT12, many authors who wanted to attend but couldn't stay for the entire event due to sleep or work, were to have a back up plan (zippy password sent to someone) in case there was issues with the program.

Also, in the event of a pure operator (no real team affiliation other than for that weekend), then an author OR team member also had to be online.

In the case of Shredder, Hiarcs, Sjeng, and a few others, all have original team members operating, so the author doesn't _need_ to be there. I would like it if they were able to attend even a round or two, but not 100% necessary.

So far everyone has complied with the rules, or I would have stated so privately to them.

Every year depending on the time zone we use to benefit one side of the planet, we have people knock off for a round or two. Usually I am given the zippypassword in the event something happens, and a phone number in case the program logs out and never comes back.

I have never had an issue with this. The only person that _really_ needs to stay up the entire time is me

As I previously stated, if I had a problem with an entry, I would have communicated this privately.

Many entrants had to have the author qualify their operator/team member before I would accept their registration.

The reason for this, is in the past, we had one entrant who used an operator, and the operator used a different program (clone) in the tournament. Many already know about this situation, so the rules were put into place to avoid this from happening again.

They were also put in place so in the event of an issue, a team member or author could help troubleshoot a problem.

If a prior entrant with no history of problems during the event wants to enter but can't be there the entire time, I would be fine with that. As long as a password or phone number is given in the event of problems.

I would much rather have the program participate, rather than have it not due to someone not being able to be online for the entire duration.

I can't think of a single CCT where an operator/team member/author didn't fall asleep or had to leave for family/work reasons. This is an online tournament where the time zone for some to attend ends up in the middle of the night or conflicts with work/family environments.

Hopefully this clears up the matter.
