Hi John, what problem do you have with gaviota? any particular GUI? I received reports it has problems with CM and Aquarium and I will fix them soon.

re the HIARCS talk, that is the only top engine i have ever played against (at full strength) because it was the only one where i felt like i wasn't simply being outcrunched which is rather dull; even though i am a very aggressive player it would often beat me to an attack on the KS. i should probably give DJ 2010 a chance in this regard.

komodo imo plays very human-like chess already (at the SGM level), very quiet, karpovian compared to many engines, & from games i have watched it gives the appearnace of having plans. however unless you're extremely strong i doubt it would be fun to play against, as it will simply wait for you to make a mistake then pounce.

yes, shredder & aquarium, which are my two main GUIs when it comes to winboard engines (actually gav is really the only WB engine i have, so...). it did work under arena, but i get faults with shredder & aqua, & i'm rarely using arena atm.

this is what shredder says in the analysis pane

rnbqk2r/pp1pbppp/2p5/8/2BP1p2/2P5/P1P1N1PP/R1BQ1RK1 w kq -

Engine: Gaviota (0 MB)
by Miguel A Ballicora

best move:---- time: 0:00.406 min
best move:---- time: 0:00.265 min
best move:---- time: 0:00.250 min

it may just be my ignorance of WB engines, i dont know. for example i dont why the hash would be 0.

edit -- it also says 'illegal command' first thing; that didnt show up in the copy for some reason.

A communication protocol glitch I assume and it'll be a piece of cake for Miguel to fix....

Thanks,
I am almost sure that when I fix the communication problem with aquarium, this shredder problem will go away too. If it doesn't I will ask again. One issue is that they do not support WB2 protocol (I dropped a couple of WB1 commands and I will put them back again) and gaviota is sending extra info that is not needed. Apparently commercial GUIs choke on that. I will remove them.

I'll be quite honest about my views:

There are no pure human like engines. All engines have computer-like moves tendency built within.

I agree with Alex.....Power Chess (W Chess) was the best...but I am also unable to get it to run on the new windows programs...

Oh yes, I forgot to say how much I miss hearing the Queen talk to me with her pretty voice... :D

After you played a game against the King, the Queen would then replay the entire game for you (female superiority, of course) and show you all the errors you made, and why you lost...

What I did not like...was that the King at times would take too long to move...just to appear and make it look like he was "thinking" all that time that you sat there waiting for him to move...!!

But that did give you the impression that you were playing against a real live, human opponent.

Yah.... the dialogue of the queen was spot on. I'm not about to go dos box or what ever to get it running again. If I understand correctly it was going to be called the Nimzovich prgram or some such. I felt it played closed positions more adroitly than a lot of other programs.
