I've just had an hour or so to toy around with the Monte Carlo (MC) feature. To do so I have concentrated on just one rather risky line of the Scandinavian I came up with about 6 years ago for OTB play in the Scandinavian - 1.e4 d5, 2.ed Nf6, 3.d4 Bg4, 4.f3 Bd7!? My laptop (not what I had 6 yrs ago) is a modern AMD with lots of cores, I generally just use it setting the current stockfish at about 7 cores and MC at 16, all locally - never sluggish and I get to do many more things while toying around with Chessbase. I tend to let the game count go to 5k or more, rather than they suggested 1k.

While the main engine produces a 'best line', MC give statistics over thousands of quickly played games. While it may confirm the Fish's 'best' line, we are looking for practical ideas for play amongst other humans so it considers other lines, giving percentages on wins/draws/losses which does seem to validate my idea of looking for chances against humans OTB by looking for non-forcing lines.

I can see where it could have saved me a lot of trial and error 6 yrs ago!
