[quote="Uri Blass"][quote="beram"][quote="Don"][quote="kranium"]Sean-
Sean Evans is not interested in testing in a fair way.

Sean prefer komodo and not houdini and increasing the luck factor
has good chances to improve the result of the weaker program that he prefers.

Increasing the luck factor does favor the weaker program, but it is not at all clear that Komodo is weaker than Houdini at the longer time controls with 4 or more cores. Komodo won Graham's 8 core tournament a point ahead of runner-up Houdini 3, and is a game ahead at last check in this match. I believe there is some time control and number of cores at which Komodo passes Houdini, and based on the evidence so far it is probably somewhere around 40/2 hours with 4 cores, somewhat faster with more.

+1

the bigger controversy IMO, is the amount of 'spin' being disbursed by the author,
who seems perfectly willing to directly contradict himself as well as his esteemed partner
in an determined attempt to deliver some 'validity' to this seriously flawed match...

of course the motive is clear, Komodo is a commercial endeavor
and anyone swallowing it all 'hook line and sinker' may mean another copy sold

both authors have been selling the notion (for some time now) that Komodo is approaching Houdini in strength,
the caveat being: but only at long time controls
(which, of course, is a extremely difficult thing to prove or disprove unless you have enormous amount of time, patience, and CPUs, almost impossible for the average user)

well, both authors have admitted here that this match favors Komodo, and i believe heavily...
for ex: there's at least 1 game where Komodo emerges from the opening with an almost full 1 pawn advantage!

i.e.: concerning objective engine testing and measurement of strength: it's a complete waste of time

ok now, back to the Dailey show!
catchphrase of the week: 'statistical noise' !

I think that Komodo definitely closes whatever gap there is with Houdini 3 at longer time controls. Most likely it is due to automated "hands off" evaluation tuning using hundreds of thousands of lighting games ,which simply does not work as well at LTC but works really well at lighting games. Two evaluation parameters that I think hurt Houdini at LTC are over valuing the Queen vs. pieces and assuming all rook endgames are drawn even if down a pawn. Although the evaluation Houdini has works really well at faster time controls, it seems that these can backfire if a strong engine has time to organize and coordinate his pieces vs. the Queen or if a strong engine can work our the deep calculations needed to avoid a draw when up a pawn in a rook endgame.

Having said that, I really do think that whatever system is used to test engines ... the colors MUST be reversed. Not doing so really hurts the credibility of the results. If an opening line is corrupt by giving a winning advantage out of book, the losing side should have the same opportunity to show that the line was winning by force. This is especially true with LTC tourneys where due to the time required to play the games, very few games are available to get a proper data set.

Re: Komodo5.1 v Houdini3 Match - Long Time Controls

Post by beram »

Sean Evans wrote:Hello group,

Game 63 is a classic example about what is happening in this match. The opening book went all the way for 30-moves and my Rybka4 program reflects 0.00 on the eval, so they are starting at even. However, as soon as I saw the piece configuration, Q + 2-R + 3-P versus Q+ R + B + 5-P, I just knew  that Komodo understood the strategic position at a much higher level than Houdini  . As the result reflects, Komodo simply used positional play to create a winning position.

All Komodo has to do now to be the number one program in the world is to increase the strength of it's bean-counter evaluation. The open-source program Gull may provide some ideas on how to accomplish this task.

The authors of most of these derivative programs like Houdini, do not have the programming knowledge to create positional play programs, like Komodo . They rely mostly on powerful evaluation with a long horizon! This is good, but it limits the programs creativity. Komodo keeps displaying this positional creativity at the level of a GM, so the bean-counter programs will continue to see long-horizons, but do not really understand the positions and lose, like a helpless child-player ....

Keep up the good work Don, I am very impressed and happy to see an original program confirming that derivatives are now being caught up to and will soon be losing the race, to be number one through superior original programming and original ideas
Hopefully, the other original programs, like Hiarcs, Shredder, Junior and ChessTiger will follow your example of how to compete against and beat derivative programs!

Cordially,

Sean Evans
Well, besides the silly remark of Houdini 3 being a "beancounter, I had my own feelings about this opening position which I think is more -0,5 than 0.00 Main reason for that is that black has the best chances with his free two centre pawns on f and e-file. So today I had a few testruns with this position between H3, K51 and Stfish(rel0308)
The outcome not to my surprise black scores 61,6%, 8 black wins and only 1 white win (K51 - H3). So the premature conclusion about Komodo playing positionally better, based on this particular game, makes no sense at all.
The complete results played with TC 5m3s, 4CPU on my AMD X61090T:

Code: Select all

1 2 3
1 Stockfish 030813 64 SSE4.2 ********** 1½½½½½½½½½ 1½½01½½½½½ 11.0/20
2 Komodo 5.1r2 64-bit 0½½½½½½½½½ ********** 0½1½01½1½½ 10.0/20
3 Houdini 3 x64 0½½10½½½½½ 1½0½10½0½½ ********** 9.0/20
Btw I think the "Stockies" will like this little tournament result :)
