This is old news.. from 2007-11-05 already. It was mentionend in an interview we made with Stefan back then and can be read on the Arena or Shredder page.

Maybe translation mistake of babelfish. It definitely is a new interview.

(i'm reading the german original text of course)

He is talking about Shredderbases not the interview Vincent.

Shredderbases have been around a long while.

Well to be honest i've put a lot of effort and time in generators and different protocol formats for my own EGTBs (a more compact format for storage than for generation which is speedbased and cpu power limited) and i'm quite disappointed by the elowin it gives today. Basically they're useful for blitz now and then.

It is not so complex to generate all 7 men and compress them well.

Stefan has the same experience there. Some years ago he made all kind of features to study EGTBs in his GUI. I remember a statement from him mentionning that by accident in a release of shredder's GUI, just going to the EGTB study facility, the interface would already crash.

First bugreport he got back on this, was about 1 year after that shredder version had been released :)

In short nearly no one on this planet uses those EGTBs to study anything.

Even professional guys (GM's) don't care. There was a guy who wanted to download some. I adviced emule and get them there. Week later i asked whether he succeeded getting KRPP KR which he wanted to study.

The comments was: "no, because i tried to download it and after 2 hours it was still busy so i stopped it!"

Stefan realizes this well i guess. 40GB is too big even for professional players who nowadays DO buy good hardware. They just don't have the patience at their ADSL connection to even download for more than a few hours.
