How about... build a chess computer into each of the game tables that will be used, and build a tiny gadget into each chess piece to enable the computer to know where each piece is?

The enabling technology I'm thinking of is the locator tags used on packages in some warehouses that allows the system to work out where everything is.

Probably not as easy as my last suggestion, but possible IMO.

One better: have the computer inside the body and claim it's a medical device (e.g. heart pacemaker, medicine dispenser or whatever). The main issue becomes how the player informs the computer what the moves are. Some SOCs have motion sensors, so a series of, for example, up and down arm moves (with buzzes from the device to confirm correct receipt) could do it.

A device inside the head could measure brainwaves, and then you wouldn't even need any physical movement (you can train yourself to control brainwaves with EEG devices (link), and this is actually a good thing for people with self-control issues to do).

Dispense with the domesticated ape altogether and secretly put a humanoid robot into the tournament! This lifelike robot is called "Sophia", and is built by Hanson Robotics, a Hong Kong company:

One problem: a robot might not get past the security scans. :(

Not sure if this is "cheating", but take modafinil before chess games. It's a legal drug, but it might be banned at chess competitions. It very likely enhances brain functionality (link).
