I guess that ImNotStockfish's point was that none of those really scream out, "Look at me, I am a test problem!"
Which is to say, even the one with the biggest jump between best and second best move had a difference of less than a pawn.
The latest TCEC contests show that a one pawn lead is better than nothing, but often ends in a draw.

I guess we could quibble either way about them.
I really would prefer than my engine picks the best move, even if it is by 1/4 of a pawn. But if (in the end) it's just a draw anyway, can we really score it as +1 and all the other drawing moves as zero? If so it seems an emotional judgement.

I think that an interesting thing about EPD test sets is that the answers change over time. When the test set was formed, a very long time control analysis by the then strongest engines said that move "x" was best. And in those days it was, since nobody could come up with something better. But five years later a 2^5 times stronger engine on 2^5 times stronger hardware sometimes finds a better answer, which is not surprising.

So I would say that until we drive a position to mate and prove all other moves do not mate as quickly, all EPD test sets have temporary answers.
A good example of this is WAC.230, where the rook sac would have beaten the engines of yesteryear. But eventually, the engines got strong enough not only to see the passed pawn, but also the passed pawn that can be generated by the opponent. So in the end, the best move is a draw, but there was a point when engines would have lost to the rook sac because they could not see deeply enough.

I guess that ImNotStockfish's point was that none of those really scream out, "Look at me, I am a test problem!"
Which is to say, even the one with the biggest jump between best and second best move had a difference of less than a pawn.
The latest TCEC contests show that a one pawn lead is better than nothing, but often ends in a draw.

I guess we could quibble either way about them.
I really would prefer than my engine picks the best move, even if it is by 1/4 of a pawn. But if (in the end) it's just a draw anyway, can we really score it as +1 and all the other drawing moves as zero? If so it seems an emotional judgement.

And if we ignore the 2nd one which I was wrong about, the jump in the other ones is truly small, less than 0.50 pawns.
As far as I understood a test position should have a clearly best move that changes the outcome of the game (winning vs draw or vice versa) or ends it rapidly (fast mate). Maybe the consensus is that even if there are multiple winning moves it doesn't matter as long as the test position bm is the best move.

As a summary I'm seeing that:

• the 3 first positions (065, 181, 203) don't seem to meet the "change game outcome requirement",

• the following 2 (011 and 019) might have multiple valid moves

• and the last one (020) might be entirely wrong?

Basically I'm proposing making a 2023 revision of the suite just like there was one in 2021
