Hi.
Now, the first game against Stockfish, taking the a7 pawn.
A draw.
Of all the games I have drawn in this challenge, this is the first one to really hurt me.
I blundered with 19. a6, simply missed 19... b6. Before that move, I think I was playing quite well.
Of course, 19. b6 followed by a6 is an easy win for me.
I considered 22. e4 (instead of 22. ef4), but Stockfish is not forced to capture; it can keep playing Kc8-Kc7 and has the draw in hand.
22. e4 only gives free winning chances to Stockfish: it might capture with 22... de4. As fas as I could calculate, Stockfish promotes first.

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
Hi.
Now, the game against Berserk, taking the b7 pawn.
A win for me.
This one was somewhat difficult, since I was unable to create a passed pawn on the queenside.
Berserk had the chance to repeat the position with 16... Kb7. I do not know how I would have continued in that case.
Fortunately, it played 16... h4. I think that already gives my king an entry point into the kingside.

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
Interesting, can you draw if those engines get all 8 pawns without using endgame database? I learn more by letting any top engines play it out without using any endgame databasepepechuy wrote: ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 2:17 am Hi.

I am quite sure I can draw those 8-pawn vs 8-pawn endings against any engine, with White and Black.
I mean eventually, not necessarily in the first try.
But that is another challenge. Probably after the Queen vs Rook odds challenge, and the Chess960 challenge.
And first, I have to finish this 8 vs 7 pawn challenge.
Oh, I play without tablebases. The computer I use for chess is quite old, its hard drive can not hold the 7-men tablebases.
If I remove some stuff, I guess it can store the 6-men tablebases. But I am not really interested in playing against that.
I find endgame tablebases quite interesting, but to do some research... not to play.
And I would need a much bigger and faster machine. Not happening any time soon.
Oh, I have a challenge, for anybody interested (probably you).
White has king, 8 pawns and 1 bishop.
Black has king, 7 pawns and 1 bishop.
All the pieces in the initial squares for standard chess.
And the bishops move on opposite coloured squares (that is, both are c bishops, or both are f bishops).
The human (or a weak engine) plays Black, a strong engine plays White.
The goal is to draw the game.
¡It is very difficult! (I tried in the past, a few years ago).
Greetings.

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
Hi.
Now, the game against Crafty, taking the c7 pawn.
A win for me.
First the good news: ¡Crafty did not resign this time! (it played till mate).
I used resign = 327.65
But I have sent that command in previous games, and Crafty did resign in the previous games.
So, I really do not know what the difference is; I am not sure I can reproduce this behavoir.
About the game, Crafty prevented me from creating a passed pawn on the queenside.
But it could not prevent my king invading the kingside. One just has to look (carefully) for ways to crack the pawn structure, avoiding a blocked position.

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
Hi.
Now, the game against Komoso, taking the d7 pawn.
A win for me.
Komodo's 3... a6 looks quite strange, but I do not think it is worse than other moves.
I think 14. e4 is slightly inaccurate from me (14. Kb5 is better), but it does not spoil the win.
Also, I think it was better for Komodo to play 13... Kc6 or 14... Kc6, to prevent my Kb5.

Re: Pawn endinge challenge: human vs engines.
I would love to see you play with the White Queen against any top 6 engines playing with the 4 Black pawns, but the engines would have to make the first move with Black, come on see if you can at least draw. of course stockfish chose ....c2, and other top engines might choose the same....c2 pawns move for Black ==>

Without using an engine, it looks like an easy draw to me.
It makes no sense for Black to move the king.
