for some years I tested it on two times. I had in the first case 300 games only and in the second 450 games. 24 ELO and 29 ELO, so I expected around 27 ELO.

Its very interesting for myself.
I think a tourney with ponder = on is much more interesting as a tourney with ponder = off and perhaps 2 cores.

Thanks for your comments, but after all my test results from the past it is a little sensation for myself.

You can be sure, if you wrote before, that it is 50 ELO ... my comment will be ... never ever!

So we all learn daily and this after so many years computer chess.

I think the problem is the branching factor. 10 years ago, a 1.5x time advantage would be a small part of a ply. Today it is nearly a full ply, which is one possible reason for the difference... Of course, a ply today is not a ply from 10 years ago, so I am not quite sure how that would drop out.

Re: To the ponder on / off test !!

Hi Bob,

final result = 44 ELO after 920 games for the 2 Crafty 23.3 JA x64 versions.

Perhaps later I will check this with an other engine too. Only possible with a WB engine under Shredder Classic 4 GUI. Here I can config that in a ponder = on tourney the WB engine is playing with ponder = off.

Hope that the programmer from WB Chronos 1.99 x64 add the ponder mode in the near future. Other possibility I test it with WB Thinker 5.4 Inert.

But all in all ...
I think its right what you wrote.
Ponder on = around 40-50 ELO.

I added your comments to this topic in my German aktuell / actual site (message 048).

Thanks!

Best
