At least it is inefficient to think long. Why make blunders after move 35 if you can make them after move 14 ?

Also one should think mostly only in opponents time unless opponent is a speed chess champion.

Not sure he saw "the whole thing", as in.. the mate-in-12 or so if black plays Bf8 instead of Kh7

Of course he calculated to the last move. IF Bf8 you play Rxf8+ followed by Rxf7+ Ke8 Rf8+ with an easy mate pattern afterwards.

Carlsen must have seen the whole sequence when he played Rc1.

So, are we just going to ignore that he went from a tablebase win to a draw in the second game?

I think he lost more so because he was trying to hold (Carlson), more than he was trying to win. By hold, I mean hold him to a draw of course.
