Pro Deo 1.2 is this the Strongest Rebel?

Post by bigo »

I can't find any point of reference since rebel 4 is not listed on any rating list that I'm aware of. At cegt they have Prodeo rated at 2623, now I know this has to be underated since rebel 4 on a xp 1800 drew a Match against 2700 Van Wely and Hardware for prodeo is twice as fast.

Pro Deo 1.6 is the newest version from Ed. If you sign up to the Chess Thinker Forum for Rebels, at the HIARCS forum there is a thread about Pro Deo 1.6. But err, Rebel 4, that is quite ancient history, my oldest is Rebel 7 I believe..

Against human grandmasters and with Jeroon Noomens expert opening preparation? I think 2623 can be easily superseded, I think a match on fast hardware with Pro Deo against Anand would still be an interesting match today! Even on a single processor, I think Pro Deo should reach about 2700 level now against a well prepared grandmaster, that would be my rough guess.

So yes probably the computers lower on the important ratinglists would be underrated against well prepared human opposition, and at the top I think they are overrated!

What Ed Schroeder says about Pro deo 1.6:

It's a beta version and I am not particular exited about it, after some more testing it's only marginal better IMO than the previous one. Hence it will stay a beta.

Not a lot of games yet, but it seems likely that at reasonable time controls 1.6 is the strongest. All of them are fairly similar (less than 100 Elo between weakest and strongest).

You need to switch on EOC learning to see ProDeo's real strenght. I know that testing groups don't like to use learning for their engines, so this message is directed to the average user.

Ed added a nice feature called "EOC learning" to ProDeo 1.5, and it alone proved to make it the strongest Rebel. Then he released ProDeo 1.6 BETA, that is actually better than 1.5. However, he made the default settings to be EOC learning off, so testing groups could test the pure strength of the new ProDeo. It's obvious that switching it on will render the strongest engine (Even though Ed didn't mean to release this ProDeo and that's why he called it BETA).

Anyway, to switch on EOC learning, do the following:

Open the file called prodeo.eng that is in your installation directory at ProDeo16\personal\ with a program like Notepad.

Find these lines:

[EOC File = ]
[EOC Use = none]
[EOC Learner = off]

And change them to:

[EOC File = eoc\prodeo.eoc]
[EOC Use = strong]
[EOC Learner = on]

And save. Presto, now ProDeo will be using the data learned from almost 7000 quality games to choose its moves. It'll also be learning from new games played on your computer provided that they are not played at too fast time controls.

ProDeo learns from its loses and wins and tweaks the score given to its moves accordingly. For example, now book-less ProDeo will automatically play c5 against e4; and c4 on the d4 d5 opening. I think that with proper learning, ProDeo can be up to 50 ELO points stronger than with EOC learning off.

Hi !

Are these 7.000 top quality chess games inside the default installation of ProDeo 1.6 beta ? I know EOC (Encyclopaedia Of Chess) -coming with Rebel12 CD-is a giant tree of 55 million positions (size 600 MB).

I don't think that these games come with ProDeo 1.6 BETA, but only the relevant positions and only for the first 30 moves. (I could be wrong, though)

Ed also tried to do EOC learning with a database of 3 million games but the result wasn't as good, it seems EOC learning must be based on games that ProDeo played itself.

Also, I think that you can make your own EOC file with ProDeo tools.
