An interesting position, where Genius played g3-g4?

Post by JensBNielsen »

Hi

I'm new here; this is my first posting.

12 years ago I programmed a chessprogram called Dabbaba. So I have some good old stuff on my computer, that might interest this forum.

I'll start with this little one.

http://www.jens-musik.dk/GeniusG3G4.htm

I assume this position may still cause many programs to play the silly g3-g4? at fast levels...

Take care, Jens

Per the link above:

[d]8/4bB2/8/7p/4k3/p5P1/6K1/8 w - - 0 0

"White easily draws with the king on h1 and giving the bishop for
blacks a-pawn. Black has the wrong bishop and cannot promote his pawn."

"White plays 1.g4?? and pushes the loss of the bishop out of the horizon.
But with a longer search it sees it doesn't help or that white plays his king
to g6 and draws."
"Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions."

Hello Jens, welcome to the place, we can always use more chessprogrammers here!

I think that for programs with a good quiescence function and lots of hashtable space this move should not occur much, but seeing that White is safe and can't lose in this position is not yet within reach without tablebases. I tried it with modified Glaurung and the eval goes only slowly towards "not-losing", the move g3-g4 is not considered although that may be "luck" because of positional evaluations without really understanding the position

Hi Eelco

Thanks for your posting.

I noticed your program even didn't consider to win the white bishop for the a-pawn. Perhaps it at the same depth can see, that black loses the h-pawn and only has a draw...

Jens

PS. Ted; thanks for your nice layout.
I hope it will make it more easy for other members here to test the position and show their results...
