interesting endgame

Post by jdart »

This occurred in Olivier Deville's OpenWar tournament, in a game between The Baron 2.2.2 and Alaric 707:

[D] 8/1K6/1P6/5p2/5Pp1/3k4/6R1/1r6 w - -

I think the only move that gives White drawing chances is Ra2, with the idea that Ke4 can be met by Ra4+.

Here White played Kc7 and lost after 78 .. Ke4 79. b7 Kxf4 (after which White had a huge fail low). The problem is, White will Queen first, but Black can give up his Rook and still win. The game continued: 80. Rh2 g3 81. Rh8 g2 82. Rg8 Kf3 83. Rg5 f4 84. b8=Q (after Rxb8 Kxb8 we have this:

[D] 1K6/8/8/6R1/5p2/5k2/6p1/8 b - -

which is a tablebase win for Black).

1.Ra2 seems the only move to draw but threason is white is threatening 2.Ra5 and 3.Kc6. (There's no point with 2.Ke4 Ra4+ Kf3)

Agreed, but what I meant was, other White moves allow .. Ke4, winning. After Ra2 Black doesn't have this.

Ra2 is a draw

0.00 Rg2a2 Kd3e4 Ra2a4+ Ke4f3 Ra4a5 Kf3xf4 Kb7c6 g4g3 Ra5b5 Rb1xb5 Kc6d7 Kf4g4 Kd7c6 g3g2 Kc6xb5 g2g1Q b6b7 Qg1b1+ Kb5a6 Qb1xb7+ Ka6a5

After Kc7:
Black wins

-M44 Kd3e4 b6b7 Ke4xf4 Rg2g1 Rb1b3 Rg1f1+ Kf4g5 Rf1e1 f5f4 Re1e7 g4g3 Re7g7+ Kg5h4 Rg7h7+ Kh4g4 Kc7d6 Rb3xb7

Interesting endgame!
