Hiarcs Paderborn 2007 - very entertaining

Post by Graham Banks »

Having tested Hiarcs 12 with the sharpen pv settings both on and off for CCRL, I've finally started testing Hiarcs Paderborn 2007.
I must say that it's the most entertaining strong engine I've had the pleasure of watching for a long while, being almost as strong as Hiarcs 12.
It seeks out the enemy king and is not afraid to make positional exchange sacs to successfully achieve its goal.
Well worth looking at and I hope that the next Hiarcs version can revert to this style.

Hi Graham,
Have you seen enough games now to substantiate this view? This would be welcome news to me, as i found H12 of course good but a bit boring. H12P i also "dumped" after some playing around when it missed a couple of obvious shots (from a chess player's view).
At the moment am fiddling with the settings of H11.1, and by reducing selectivity and pruning a bit, it starts finding more aggressive or speculative moves. BTW H12 "freezes" a lot more when adjusting those parameters, hence H11.1.
Looking forward to the further H12P results and your view on the games. I might just dump H11.1 for it
Cheers,
Kaj

You don't need a lot of games to notice the greater playing style of Hiarcs Paderborn 2007, it's evident. I was praising it since it came out and I'm glad someone else concurs with me :)

Two makes a crowd!
I'll return to Paderborn, and of course its tuning possibilities, when i've ran out of progress with 11.1.
My best,
Kaj

For a minute I though I was in the Hiarcs forum. Once you finish talking the talk, walk the walk in the PlayChess engine room. The guys there will give you a "nice shave", you might be lucky to escape with a few draws with the Hiarcs Paderborn 2007 . :)

You may be right there, as there is all sorts of fish around.
So, one should not try to beat fish by its own game (lotta selectivity and pruning and of course some superb programming to go with it) but try to beat them by another concept or cocktail (less selectivity, less pruning, more accuracy when seeing more of the landscape, this of course only possible on longer time controls). And if nothing else works, a Smith&Wesson beats Four Aces
My best,

For someone who eats a lot of burgers, the slogan for tacobell was sort of new..

"Think outside the bun"

May be we should invent one for people who only cares about winning at playchess..

"Think outside of playchess"

Hiarcs Paderborn was the winner of IPCC, I dont think anyone can take that away.
