This very cool Zach, but note that not all users are high skilled like yourself when it comes to computers and software 8-)

Hehe, yes, that is true, but I cannot resist a chance at shameless advocacy. :)

Compiling a kernel is actually very easy though, you don't have to even look at the sources, just a configuration file. I imagine for most of the people here who run tournaments, set up engines and adapters and such it shouldn't be a problem.
I've got an old laptop that I want to use as backup for chess. Do I go :-

1.) Windows and install Windows 2000 to use as little of the 256 RAM available. Free chess apps like ICC Client, Arena, Playchess, SCID etc

Any suggestions which route I should go?
Win 2000 would be a better choice. Pretty stable OS. If you are going to use the laptop only for chess, I would also recommend Win 98 SE. No support anymore but if you are not going to add/remove programs, this will give you a nice environment.

In terms of memory use, the linux route can be far leaner than any windows. Unfortunately, most chess GUI programs don't work perfectly with wine. SCID has a native linux version though. Arena worked well in wine last time I tried it. I never tried the other two you mention, but engines run great in wine.

Although I personally would choose windows 2000, I don't see any major memory savings over XP. You can run either one in under 100MB if you don't do much beyond a clean install. I would avoid any flavor of 9x. The NT kernel is far superior for both general stability, and for engine performance.

What about antivirus choice? I tried to find AVG 7.5 since avg 8 eats up so much resources but the AVG people have removed all links to 7.5. Or could I simply skip installing an antivirus and download files to another computer with antivirus to check them? Is Nod32 the antivirus that consumes the least memory?

I'd suggest to remove AVG 8 before installing 7.5.

Chek it out what? Which are the distros you say?
I have an old Armada with 98 Mb Ram, no more is possible and a processor running at 266 Mhz. Actually it runs very well in Window 95, the original OS for the machine.
I wonder -I ask you, pal- if there is a Linux distro capable of giving me MORE with that machine that the w95.....
