Hello members of this forum,
after download Beowulf 2.4 Windows-executable version from the URL
http://www.frayn.net/beowulf/ you see instead in the DOS-window "Welcome to Beowulf 2.3!"
It was reported about this bug three years ago in the "Ridderkerk-forum"
Now my question: Was this only a typo or mistaken identity of the versions 2.3 / 2.4 of Beowulf?
(Note: The embedding into the Arena-GUI is o.k.)
I use Windows XP (SP3) with 32 bit , so the compiled X64 is for me not an option. Who has further informations about the last public available
version of Beowulf by Colin Frayn?
Best wishes,
Norbert

Re: Beowulf 2.4 Windows-executable version
Yesterday I contacted Dr. Colin Frayn concerning your question via the e-mail address given on the Beowulf website.
I received a reply saying that he has no idea if the old version was 2.3 or 2.4, but that he went ahead and recompiled the 2.4 source and put it on his website. He stated that he hasn't worked on Beowulf in years, so he might have forgotten some optimisations - to let him know if it performs worse than expected.
The above is the context of his e-mail, rewritten in my words.
I tried running Beowulf on my OS and received a reply that "Beowulf.exe was expecting a newer operating system". I'll have to wait till I get Windows XP to run it.

Re: Beowulf 2.4 Windows-executable version
Trying the Beowulf 2.4 Window's executable on a XP laptop (It reads 2.4 in the executable's window now!).
Using the configuration file to set it up the engine doesn't appear to understand full path names - I thought maybe it did use full paths. So tablebases need to be in a subdirectory of the engine's folder. The opening book and personality files use just the file names, no full paths in the configuration file.
The above 'tbs' being a subdirectory where I put 4-man tablebases, tbs\ looks to work also.
Anyone getting full paths to the tablebases to work in the configuration file it would be nice to know.

Code: Select all
# Tablebase Directory Location
TBLOC tbs
# Opening Book Location
OPBOOK bookl.dat
# Personality File Location
PERSON default.per

Hi Charles,
Here's a build for legacy pc's. It should on anything from Pentium/Win95 and up.

Re: Beowulf 2.4 Windows-executable version
I never realised that the latest microsoft compilers produce exes that are no longer backward compatible with win98/95.
I use Intel compiler, but that still relies on microsoft libraries.
From now on I will include a 'legacy pc' build with all my compiles so those with older hardware/os will still be able to run them.
Just to get the ball rolling here's Crafty 22.1 >
