The following long thread in CCC will be about how dishonest was for Rybka to win WCCC 2008 using a cluster with 40 cores !
What do you think? Right or not ?

i dont really think so Silvian
the whole point of the WCCC is to show what is the strongest chess playing entity at the event
so hardware + Engine =Entity
i myself do find it more interesting to eliminate the hardware advantages and just let the pure engines duke it out
however this is not the purpose of the WCCC's
i wonder if there are any tournaments during the year where all engines must use the same hardware?
i think there are no events like that?
1) The rules are clear, and Rybka is playing by the rule
2) Nobody has questioned the strength of Rybka, even with all the activity going on about Rybka recently.
If you are referring to this recent, say negative, activity about Rybka and her author in the CCC forum, then for this prediction to be true, you have to assume that many people don't UNDERSTAND AT ALL what it was all about, and at what point the question of honesty was questioned.
What is your prediction about the thread you are referring to?

As far as I know only the Chess Classic Chess960 championship is using equal hardware platforms.
Richard.

wow
now that is amazing
the only tournament held on equal hardware and it is not even conventional chess
i imagine it must be too hard to insist that all Entrants in a tourney come equipped with the same or very similar hardware

So everyone MUST use a 40 core cluster?
actually i would be very content for all engines to use a single core
not for the WCCC which is not the intended purpose
but for at least one tournament through out the year
would be interesting to see the naked strength of the Engine under tournament conditions with no boost from hardware
I like the free-for-all rules. There are plenty of rating lists and such that equalize out hardware and such. This is about playing the best chess possible, and encourages the advancement of research into how to do that in areas not well covered by "lowest common denominator" type hardware rules.

Completely wrong reasoning. There used to be a "uniform platform tournament" run by Don Beal at Queen Mary College in London. It died due to a _complete_ lack of interest by competitors. What is "the" platform of choice? Microsoft? What about the Apple programs? 32 bit or 64 bit? One cpu? What about the SMP search programs.
It was considered too exclusive because many programs were not designed on the "uniform platform" chosen.
The idea was discontinued due to lack of interest.
